About Atrovent Hfa
Overview
Atrovent HFA is an inhaler containing ipratropium bromide, an anticholinergic bronchodilator. It is used for maintenance treatment of airway narrowing associated with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), including chronic bronchitis and emphysema. It works by blocking the action of acetylcholine on airway muscles, helping to keep the airways open.
What it treats
Maintenance treatment of bronchospasm (narrowing of the airways) associated with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), including chronic bronchitis and emphysema.
Safety information
Side effects
Common side effects include bronchitis, worsening of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), shortness of breath and headache. Serious side effects include severe allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis, and unexpected worsening of airway tightening after using the inhaler (paradoxical bronchospasm). Stop using Atrovent HFA and seek immediate medical help if these occur. Contact a doctor immediately if symptoms of narrow-angle glaucoma or difficulty passing urine (urinary retention) develop. Use requires caution in people with narrow-angle glaucoma, an enlarged prostate or blockage at the bladder outlet.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.
Before taking this medicine
Do not use Atrovent HFA if you are allergic to ipratropium bromide, any other ingredient in the inhaler, atropine or any atropine derivative. Use with caution if you have narrow-angle glaucoma, an enlarged prostate or an obstruction at the bladder neck. Consult a doctor immediately if symptoms of narrow-angle glaucoma or difficulty passing urine develop. Atrovent HFA is not intended for the initial treatment of sudden episodes of airway narrowing that require fast-acting rescue treatment. Stop using it and seek medical help if an allergic reaction, including a severe reaction called anaphylaxis, occurs, or if breathing becomes worse because the airways narrow after use.
Interactions
Avoid using Atrovent HFA with other medicines containing anticholinergics, as their effects may add together. Tell your doctor if you use any of these medicines. Atrovent HFA has been used with other COPD treatments, including sympathomimetic bronchodilators, methylxanthines, and oral or inhaled steroids. Except for albuterol, formal studies have not fully assessed how these combinations affect safety and effectiveness.
