About Beovu

Overview

Beovu contains brolucizumab, a vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) inhibitor given as an injection into the eye. It is used to treat neovascular (wet) age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and diabetic macular edema (DME). It works by blocking VEGF-A, a protein involved in the growth of new blood vessels and fluid leakage from blood vessels.

Safety information

Side effects

Common side effects include blurred vision, cataracts, bleeding on the surface of the eye, eye pain and floaters in your vision. Serious side effects include infection inside the eye (endophthalmitis), retinal detachment, inflammation or blockage of blood vessels in the retina, increased pressure inside the eye and allergic reactions. There is also a potential risk of blood clots in arteries with VEGF inhibitors such as Beovu. Report any change in vision to your doctor without delay, including symptoms that may suggest an infection inside the eye or retinal detachment. Contact your doctor if you suspect another serious side effect.

When to call your doctor

- Seek medical attention immediately for any change in vision, including blurred vision or new floating spots in your vision. - Seek medical attention immediately if you have eye pain.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.

Before taking this medicine

Beovu must not be used if you have an infection in or around the eye, active inflammation inside the eye, or hypersensitivity (allergy) to the medicine. Important risks include infection inside the eye (endophthalmitis) and retinal detachment after injection. Report any symptoms suggesting either condition without delay. Inflammation or blockage of the retinal blood vessels has also been reported, usually with inflammation inside the eye. Report any change in vision without delay. Pressure inside the eye may rise within 30 minutes after injection. There is also a potential risk of blood clots in arteries with VEGF inhibitors injected into the eye.

Dosing

Dosing is set by your prescriber. Each health care professional may prescribe medication differently according to a patient's medical history and condition, so follow the directions on your prescription label and speak to your doctor or pharmacist before changing anything.

Storage

Store in the original carton to protect it from light. Check the pack for whether it must be refrigerated before first use. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
