About Breo Ellipta

Overview

Breo Ellipta is a prescription inhaler containing fluticasone furoate and vilanterol. It is used for ongoing treatment of asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Fluticasone furoate reduces inflammation in the airways, while vilanterol relaxes the muscles around them to help keep them open. It is not a rescue inhaler and should not be used to relieve sudden breathing symptoms.

What it treats

Maintenance treatment of asthma. Maintenance treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), including chronic bronchitis and emphysema.

Safety information

Side effects

Common side effects include headache, cold-like symptoms, throat irritation, hoarseness and thrush, a fungal infection of the mouth or throat. Serious side effects include pneumonia, particularly in people with COPD; abnormal heart rhythms; and eye problems such as glaucoma or cataracts. Contact a doctor promptly for fever, chills, increased cough or mucus, worsening breathlessness, a fast or irregular heartbeat, eye pain or blurred vision. Seek emergency medical help for sudden worsening of wheezing or breathing immediately after using the inhaler, or signs of a severe allergic reaction, such as swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat, difficulty breathing or fainting.

When to call your doctor

- Seek immediate medical attention if wheezing or breathing suddenly worsens after using the inhaler. - Get emergency help for swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat, or hives with difficulty breathing or swallowing. - Seek immediate medical attention for chest pain, a fast or irregular heartbeat, or fainting. - Get urgent medical help for fever or chills with increased mucus, a worsening cough or worsening breathlessness.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.

Before taking this medicine

Breo Ellipta should not be used by anyone with a severe allergy to milk proteins or a known allergy to fluticasone furoate, vilanterol or any other ingredient in the inhaler. It must not be used to treat a sudden asthma attack, sudden worsening of breathing or a severe, prolonged asthma attack. It is not a rescue inhaler. Tell the prescriber before use if you have: - Heart disease, an irregular heartbeat or high blood pressure. - An overactive thyroid, diabetes, seizures or low blood potassium. - Liver disease. - Tuberculosis or another untreated infection. - Osteoporosis or risk factors for weak bones. - Glaucoma or cataracts. Medical advice is also needed during pregnancy or breastfeeding, and when changing from oral corticosteroids. Do not use Breo Ellipta with another medicine containing a long-acting beta₂ agonist, as this can increase the risk of serious side effects.

Interactions

Tell your doctor or pharmacist about all medicines, vitamins and herbal supplements you take before using Breo Ellipta. Important interactions include: • Strong enzyme inhibitors, such as ketoconazole, itraconazole, ritonavir and cobicistat, which can increase fluticasone furoate and vilanterol levels and the risk of side effects. • Beta-blockers, including some eye drops for glaucoma, which may reduce vilanterol’s effect and cause breathing difficulties. • Other long-acting beta-agonist medicines, which should not be used alongside Breo Ellipta because of the risk of excessive effects on the heart and other side effects. • Monoamine oxidase inhibitors, tricyclic antidepressants and medicines that prolong the heart’s QT interval, which may increase the risk of abnormal heart rhythms. • Certain diuretics (“water tablets”), which can worsen low potassium levels and increase the risk of heart-related side effects. Do not stop or change prescribed medicines without medical advice.

Dosing

Dosing is set by your prescriber. Each health care professional may prescribe medication differently according to a patient's medical history and condition, so follow the directions on your prescription label and speak to your doctor or pharmacist before changing anything.

Storage

Store below 25°C away from direct heat and sunlight. Do not pierce or burn the device, even when it is empty. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
