About Capoten

Overview

Capoten is a prescription tablet containing captopril, an angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor. It is used to treat high blood pressure and heart failure. It works by reducing the production of angiotensin II, a substance that narrows blood vessels and contributes to salt and fluid retention.

When to call your doctor

• If you find out you are pregnant, stop taking Capoten and contact your doctor immediately. It can harm or cause the death of an unborn baby.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.

Before taking this medicine

Do not take Capoten (captopril) if you are allergic to captopril or any other ACE inhibitor, including if you have had angioedema (swelling beneath the skin) while taking another ACE inhibitor. Do not take captopril with aliskiren if you have diabetes. Do not take captopril with a neprilysin inhibitor, such as sacubitril. Allow at least 36 hours between stopping sacubitril/valsartan and starting captopril, or between stopping captopril and starting sacubitril/valsartan.

Dosing

Dosing is set by your prescriber. Each health care professional may prescribe medication differently according to a patient's medical history and condition, so follow the directions on your prescription label and speak to your doctor or pharmacist before changing anything.

Storage

Store below 25°C in a dry place, in the original pack, away from direct light and moisture. Do not keep it in a bathroom. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
