About Chantix
Overview
Chantix is a prescription tablet containing varenicline. It is used as an aid to help people stop smoking. It works by partly stimulating certain nicotine receptors in the brain while blocking nicotine from binding to them, which is thought to reduce the rewarding effects of smoking.
What it treats
An aid to smoking cessation (quitting smoking).
Safety information
Side effects
Common side effects include nausea, vivid or unusual dreams, constipation, gas and vomiting. Nausea is the most common side effect. Trouble sleeping can also occur. Serious side effects reported with Chantix include: • Changes in mood, thinking or behaviour, including depression, extreme mood elevation, hallucinations, paranoia, aggression, anxiety, panic, and thoughts of harming yourself or others. Suicide attempts and deaths have been reported. Stop taking Chantix and contact a healthcare provider if these symptoms occur. • New or worsening seizures. Contact a healthcare provider if a seizure occurs. • Sleepwalking, sometimes involving harmful behaviour toward yourself, others or property. Stop taking Chantix and notify your healthcare provider if this occurs. • Serious allergic reactions, including swelling, which can be life-threatening. Stop taking Chantix and seek medical care immediately if symptoms occur. • Rare, potentially life-threatening skin reactions. Stop taking Chantix and contact a healthcare provider immediately if a rash appears with sores affecting the mouth or other mucous membranes. • Heart or blood vessel problems, particularly in people with existing cardiovascular disease. Report new or worsening symptoms to your healthcare provider. Seek immediate medical attention for signs of a heart attack or stroke. Chantix may increase the effects of alcohol. Reduce alcohol intake until you know how it affects you. Accidental injuries, including traffic accidents, have been reported; use caution when driving or operating machinery until you know how Chantix affects you. Stopping smoking, with or without medicine, can cause nicotine withdrawal symptoms and may worsen an existing mental health condition.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.
Before taking this medicine
Do not take Chantix if you have previously had a serious allergic reaction or serious skin reaction to it. Tell your prescriber if you have a history of seizures, other factors that increase seizure risk, or heart or blood vessel disease. New or worsening seizures have been reported. People with existing cardiovascular disease may have an increased risk of cardiovascular events; this must be weighed against the health benefits of stopping smoking. Serious changes in mood, thinking or behaviour, including suicidal thoughts or actions, have been reported. Stop taking Chantix and contact a healthcare professional if these occur. Also stop taking it and contact your healthcare professional if you experience sleepwalking. Stop taking Chantix and seek immediate medical care for an allergic reaction, including swelling, or a skin rash with sores affecting areas such as the mouth. Report new or worsening cardiovascular symptoms, and seek immediate medical attention for signs of a heart attack or stroke. Reduce alcohol intake until you know how Chantix affects you, as it may increase alcohol’s effects. Use caution when driving or operating machinery until you know how it affects you.
Interactions
Chantix has no known clinically meaningful effects on how the body processes other medicines. However, stopping smoking can change how some medicines work, including theophylline, warfarin and insulin. Tell your doctor if you take these medicines, as your treatment may need adjustment. Discuss any other stop-smoking treatments with your doctor before combining them with Chantix. The safety and effectiveness of these combinations have not been established. Using Chantix with nicotine patches led to a high rate of people stopping treatment because of side effects.

Dosing
Dosing is set by your prescriber. Each health care professional may prescribe medication differently according to a patient's medical history and condition, so follow the directions on your prescription label and speak to your doctor or pharmacist before changing anything.
Storage
Store below 25°C in a dry place, in the original pack, away from direct light and moisture. Do not keep it in a bathroom. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
