About Naltrexone
Overview
Naltrexone is an opioid antagonist used to treat alcohol dependence and block the effects of opioids. It works by opposing opioid effects without producing opioid-like effects itself. It has only been shown to provide treatment benefits as part of an appropriate addiction management plan.

Safety information
Side effects
Nausea was reported in clinical trials and caused some patients to stop treatment. Serious risks include liver injury, observed at higher doses, and severe opioid withdrawal. Naltrexone can trigger or worsen withdrawal in anyone who is not completely opioid-free. Contact a doctor promptly if you experience opioid withdrawal or suspect liver injury.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.
Before taking this medicine
Do not take naltrexone if you: • Are taking opioid pain medicines. • Are currently dependent on opioids, including if you are receiving methadone or buprenorphine maintenance treatment. • Are in acute opioid withdrawal. • Have failed a naloxone challenge test or have a positive urine test for opioids. • Have a history of an allergic reaction or sensitivity to naltrexone hydrochloride or any other ingredient in the product. It is not known whether sensitivity to naloxone or opioids containing phenanthrene also means you may be sensitive to naltrexone.
Interactions
Tell your doctor about other medicines you take. Interactions between naltrexone and medicines other than opioids have not been studied, so caution is advised. Naltrexone can block the effects of opioid-containing medicines, including some cough and cold remedies, medicines for diarrhoea and opioid painkillers. If opioid pain relief is needed in an emergency, it may require more opioid than usual and cause deeper, longer-lasting breathing suppression. Make sure the treating team knows you take naltrexone. Using naltrexone with disulfiram is not usually recommended unless the likely benefits outweigh the risks, because both can harm the liver. The safety and effectiveness of this combination are unknown. Lethargy and sleepiness have been reported when naltrexone is taken with thioridazine.

Storage
Store below 25°C in a dry place, in the original pack, away from direct light and moisture. Do not keep it in a bathroom. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
