About Creon
Overview
Creon is a pancreatic enzyme medicine containing lipase, protease and amylase derived from pig pancreatic glands. It treats exocrine pancreatic insufficiency, when the pancreas does not provide enough digestive enzymes, due to cystic fibrosis, chronic pancreatitis, surgical removal of the pancreas or other conditions. These enzymes work in the small intestine to break down fats, proteins and starches in food.

Safety information
Side effects
Reported side effects include vomiting, dizziness and cough in people with cystic fibrosis. In people with chronic pancreatitis or who have had pancreatic surgery, reported side effects include high or low blood sugar, abdominal pain, abnormal stools, gas, frequent bowel movements, and inflammation of the nose and throat. Serious reactions reported with pancreatic enzyme products containing pancrelipase include fibrosing colonopathy (scarring and narrowing of the colon), high uric acid levels in the blood, and allergic reactions. Contact a doctor if you develop any of these. Fibrosing colonopathy is associated with high-dose pancreatic enzyme treatment in people with cystic fibrosis. Extra caution is needed if you have gout, kidney impairment, high uric acid levels or an allergy to pig proteins. Creon can irritate the mouth if chewed or held in the mouth. Pancreatic enzyme products also carry a theoretical risk of transmitting viruses.
