About Cytomel

Overview

Cytomel tablets contain liothyronine sodium, a synthetic form of the thyroid hormone T3. It is used to replace thyroid hormone in people with hypothyroidism (an underactive thyroid). It is also used alongside surgery and radioiodine therapy for well-differentiated thyroid cancer and in diagnostic tests for certain thyroid conditions. It works by acting inside cells to control gene activity and protein production.

What it treats

• Thyroid hormone replacement for an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism), whether present from birth or acquired, including cases caused by thyroid, pituitary or hypothalamic problems. • Suppression of thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) alongside surgery and radioiodine therapy for well-differentiated thyroid cancer. • Diagnostic thyroid suppression testing to help distinguish suspected mild hyperthyroidism from thyroid tissue functioning independently of normal control.

Side effects

Cytomel side effects are mainly symptoms of excess thyroid hormone when treatment provides more than the body needs. Commonly reported effects include headache, nervousness, irritability, trouble sleeping, tremor, muscle weakness, increased appetite, weight loss, diarrhea, difficulty tolerating heat, menstrual changes and skin rash. Other reported effects include sweating, fatigue, anxiety, muscle cramps, vomiting, abdominal cramps and hair loss. Contact a doctor promptly for a racing or irregular heartbeat, palpitations, shortness of breath or increased blood pressure. Serious reported effects include heart failure, chest pain from reduced blood flow to the heart, heart attack and cardiac arrest. Chest pain or severe difficulty breathing warrants immediate medical attention. Older adults and people with existing heart disease have a higher risk of heart-related reactions. Excess thyroid hormone can also reduce bone density. Cytomel may worsen blood sugar control in people with diabetes. In people with adrenal insufficiency, starting Cytomel before treatment with replacement glucocorticoids can trigger an acute adrenal crisis.

Before taking this medicine

Do not take Cytomel if you have uncorrected adrenal insufficiency (when the adrenal glands do not make enough hormones). This must be treated with replacement glucocorticoids before starting Cytomel to avoid an acute adrenal crisis. Cytomel tablets must not be used to treat myxedema coma. Extra caution is needed in older adults and people with heart or blood vessel disease because of the risk of heart-related reactions, including atrial fibrillation (an irregular heartbeat). If you have diabetes, Cytomel may worsen blood sugar control. Careful monitoring is needed when treatment is started, changed or stopped, and your diabetes medicines or insulin may need adjustment. Thyroid hormone requirements may increase during pregnancy; your prescriber should assess any treatment changes.

Interactions
