About Thyrogen
Overview
Thyrogen contains thyrotropin alfa, a laboratory-made version of human thyroid-stimulating hormone. It is used to support thyroglobulin blood testing, with or without radioiodine imaging, during follow-up after thyroid removal for well-differentiated thyroid cancer. It also supports radioiodine treatment to destroy remaining thyroid tissue after near-total or total thyroid removal in patients with no evidence of distant spread of the cancer. It works by stimulating thyroid cells to take up iodine and release thyroglobulin, a protein measured in blood tests as a marker of thyroid cancer.
What it treats
• To support follow-up testing for well-differentiated thyroid cancer after thyroid removal, using serum thyroglobulin testing with or without radioiodine imaging. • To support radioiodine treatment to destroy remaining thyroid tissue after near-total or total thyroid removal for well-differentiated thyroid cancer, when there is no evidence of cancer spread to distant sites.
Safety information
Side effects
The most common side effects reported in clinical trials were nausea and headache, each affecting more than 5% of patients. Serious risks include an overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism), stroke, other neurological events in patients whose cancer has spread to the central nervous system, and sudden, rapid and painful enlargement of thyroid cancer that has spread to distant sites. Contact a doctor immediately if you suspect a serious reaction. Patients at risk of hyperthyroidism may need hospital care during treatment and observation afterward. If Thyrogen is given with radioactive iodine, the warnings and precautions for radioactive iodine also apply.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.
Before taking this medicine
Thyrogen must not be used with radioiodine during pregnancy, or with therapeutic radioiodine while breastfeeding. When Thyrogen is given with radioiodine, all contraindications, warnings and precautions for radioiodine also apply. Thyrogen can cause an overactive thyroid. Hospital administration and observation afterwards should be considered for patients at risk. Stroke has been reported in female patients, and other neurological events have occurred in patients whose cancer has spread to the central nervous system. Sudden, rapid and painful tumour enlargement can occur when thyroid cancer has spread to distant sites. Caution is needed in people with end-stage kidney disease who depend on dialysis: Thyrogen is cleared much more slowly, which can keep thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) levels elevated for longer.

Dosing

Storage
Store in the original carton to protect it from light. Check the pack for whether it must be refrigerated before first use. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
