About Edecrin
Overview
Edecrin is a prescription diuretic (water tablet) containing ethacrynic acid. It treats fluid buildup (edema) associated with congestive heart failure, liver cirrhosis and kidney disease when a stronger diuretic effect is needed. It works by increasing urine output to help the body remove excess fluid.
What it treats
- Fluid buildup (edema) associated with congestive heart failure, liver cirrhosis or kidney disease, including nephrotic syndrome, when a stronger diuretic effect is needed. - Short-term management of fluid buildup in the abdomen due to cancer (ascites), edema of unknown cause and lymphedema. - Short-term management of edema in hospitalized children, other than infants, with congenital heart disease or nephrotic syndrome.
Safety information
Before taking this medicine
Do not take Edecrin if you cannot pass urine (anuria) or are allergic to any ingredient in the medicine. It must not be given to infants. In people with severe, progressive kidney disease, treatment must be stopped if electrolyte imbalances worsen, waste products build up in the blood, or urine output decreases. If severe, watery diarrhea occurs, Edecrin must be stopped and must not be used again.
Interactions
Tell your doctor if you take lithium, warfarin, aminoglycoside antibiotics, certain cephalosporin antibiotics or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Lithium should generally not be taken with Edecrin because Edecrin reduces lithium removal by the kidneys, increasing the risk of lithium toxicity. Combining Edecrin with aminoglycosides or certain cephalosporins should be avoided because it may increase the risk of hearing damage. Edecrin can affect how warfarin binds to proteins in the blood, so your doctor may need to adjust your warfarin treatment. NSAIDs may reduce Edecrin’s effects on fluid and salt removal and blood pressure. Your doctor should monitor whether Edecrin is working as intended if these medicines are used together.

Storage
Store below 25°C in a dry place, in the original pack, away from direct light and moisture. Do not keep it in a bathroom. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
