About Emend
Overview
Emend contains aprepitant, an anti-nausea medicine used with other anti-nausea medicines to help prevent nausea and vomiting caused by certain cancer chemotherapy treatments. It is used for prevention during initial and repeat chemotherapy courses, not for treating nausea and vomiting that have already started. It works by blocking substance P at NK1 receptors in the brain, helping to prevent vomiting.
What it treats
Used with other anti-nausea medicines to prevent: • Acute and delayed nausea and vomiting caused by cancer chemotherapy with a high risk of these effects, including high-dose cisplatin. • Nausea and vomiting caused by cancer chemotherapy with a moderate risk of these effects. These uses include initial and repeat chemotherapy courses.
Safety information
Side effects
Common side effects in adults include tiredness, weakness, diarrhea, indigestion, abdominal pain and hiccups. Dehydration, a reduced white blood cell count and an increase in the liver enzyme ALT are also common. In children, common side effects include low levels of neutrophils (a type of white blood cell), headache, diarrhea, reduced appetite, cough, tiredness, reduced hemoglobin, dizziness and hiccups. Important risks also include medicine interactions that can increase the risk of adverse effects. Contact your doctor to review other medicines you take. If you take warfarin, Emend may lower your INR, affecting anticoagulation control. INR monitoring is needed during the two weeks after starting Emend, particularly on days 7–10. Hormonal contraceptives may be less effective during treatment and for 28 days after the last dose of Emend. Use an effective alternative or back-up method of contraception during this time.
Before taking this medicine
Do not take Emend if you are allergic to aprepitant or any other ingredient, or if you take pimozide. Severe allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis, have been reported. Taking Emend with pimozide can increase pimozide levels and cause serious or life-threatening heart rhythm problems. Tell your prescriber about all medicines you take, as Emend can interact with medicines affected by the liver enzyme CYP3A4. If you take warfarin, Emend may reduce your INR. Your INR should be monitored during the two weeks after starting Emend, particularly on days 7 to 10. Hormonal contraceptives may be less effective during treatment and for 28 days after the last dose. Use an effective alternative or back-up method of contraception during this time.

Storage
Store below 25°C in a dry place, in the original pack, away from direct light and moisture. Do not keep it in a bathroom. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
