About Eylea
Overview
Eylea contains aflibercept, a VEGF inhibitor given by injection into the eye. It is used to treat wet age-related macular degeneration, macular edema following retinal vein occlusion, diabetic macular edema, diabetic retinopathy and retinopathy of prematurity. It works by binding growth factors that can cause new blood vessels to form and fluid to leak from blood vessels, blocking their signals.

Safety information
Side effects
Common side effects include bleeding on the surface of the eye, eye pain, cataract, separation of the gel inside the eye from the retina, floaters, and increased pressure inside the eye. Serious side effects include allergic reactions, infection inside the eye, retinal detachment, and inflammation of retinal blood vessels, with or without blockage. Contact a doctor without delay if you notice signs or symptoms of these problems. Eye pressure can rise within 60 minutes after an injection. There is also a potential risk of blood clots in arteries following injections of VEGF inhibitors such as Eylea.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.
Before taking this medicine
Eylea must not be used in people with an infection in or around the eye, active inflammation inside the eye, or hypersensitivity (allergy) to the medicine. Injections into the eye may cause a serious infection inside the eye (endophthalmitis), retinal detachment, or inflammation of retinal blood vessels, with or without blockage. Patients or caregivers should report any signs or symptoms suggesting these problems without delay. Pressure inside the eye may rise within 60 minutes of an injection. There is also a potential risk of blood clots in arteries with medicines that inhibit VEGF, including Eylea. Infants treated for retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) need extended monitoring of the condition.

Dosing
Dosing is set by your prescriber. Each health care professional may prescribe medication differently according to a patient's medical history and condition, so follow the directions on your prescription label and speak to your doctor or pharmacist before changing anything.
Storage
Store in the original carton below 25°C, protected from light, unless the pack states refrigeration. Do not freeze. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
