FERRIPROX can cause agranulocytosis that can lead to serious infections and death. Neutropenia may precede the development of agranulocytosis.
Measure the absolute neutrophil count (ANC) before starting FERRIPROX therapy and monitor regularly while on therapy.
Interrupt FERRIPROX therapy if neutropenia develops.
Interrupt FERRIPROX if infection develops, and monitor the ANC more frequently.
Advise patients taking FERRIPROX to report immediately any symptoms indicative of infection.

About Ferriprox
Overview
Ferriprox (deferiprone) tablets are an iron-chelating medicine. They treat iron overload caused by blood transfusions in adults and children aged 8 years and older with thalassemia syndromes, sickle cell disease or other anemias. Deferiprone works by binding to iron to form stable complexes. Safety and effectiveness have not been established for transfusional iron overload in people with myelodysplastic syndrome or Diamond Blackfan anemia.
What it treats

Safety information
Side effects
Common side effects in people with thalassemia include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, joint pain, raised liver enzymes and a low neutrophil count (a type of white blood cell). In people with sickle cell disease or other anemias, common side effects include fever, abdominal pain, bone pain, headache, vomiting, pain in the arms or legs, sickle cell crises, back pain, raised liver enzymes, joint pain, throat pain, nose and throat inflammation, a low neutrophil count, cough and nausea. Serious side effects that warrant contacting a doctor include neutropenia and agranulocytosis, which are low or severely low levels of certain white blood cells, liver enzyme elevations and zinc deficiency. Liver enzymes should be monitored monthly, and treatment stopped if elevations persist. Zinc levels should be monitored during treatment, with supplementation if deficiency develops. Ferriprox can harm an unborn baby. Contact your doctor if you are pregnant or become pregnant during treatment.

Before taking this medicine
Do not take Ferriprox if you are allergic to deferiprone or any of the tablet ingredients. Reported allergic reactions include hives, swelling around the eyes with a skin rash, and Henoch–Schönlein purpura, a condition involving inflammation of small blood vessels. Ferriprox can cause liver enzyme elevations. Liver enzymes should be checked monthly, and treatment should be stopped if elevations persist. Zinc levels should be monitored during treatment, with supplementation if a deficiency develops. Ferriprox can harm an unborn baby. If you are pregnant or planning pregnancy, discuss this risk with your prescriber. Do not breastfeed during treatment.
Interactions
Tell your doctor about all medicines and supplements you take. Ferriprox should not be taken with medicines associated with neutropenia or agranulocytosis (low levels of certain white blood cells). If taking them together cannot be avoided, your doctor must closely monitor your absolute neutrophil count. Medicines that inhibit the enzyme UGT1A6 should also be avoided with Ferriprox. Keep at least 4 hours between Ferriprox and medicines or supplements containing minerals such as iron, aluminum or zinc.

Dosing

Storage
Store below 25°C in a dry place, in the original pack, away from direct light and moisture. Do not keep it in a bathroom. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
