About Fosamax , Fosavance

Overview

Alendronate is a bisphosphonate medicine used to treat and prevent osteoporosis in women after menopause and to increase bone mass in men with osteoporosis. It is also used to treat osteoporosis caused by glucocorticoid medicines and Paget’s disease of bone. It works by slowing the activity of cells that break down bone, reducing bone loss.

What it treats

- Treatment and prevention of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women. - Treatment to increase bone mass in men with osteoporosis. - Treatment of glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis. - Treatment of Paget’s disease of bone.

Safety information

Side effects

Common side effects include abdominal pain, acid reflux, constipation, diarrhoea, indigestion, nausea, and bone, joint or muscle pain. Serious side effects include upper digestive tract problems, worsening low blood calcium, severe bone, joint or muscle pain, jawbone damage (osteonecrosis), and unusual fractures, including fractures of the thigh bone. Stop taking alendronate and contact your doctor if you develop new or worsening upper digestive tract symptoms or severe bone, joint or muscle pain. Contact your doctor if you develop new thigh or groin pain, as this needs assessment for a possible fracture. Low blood calcium must be corrected before treatment begins.

When to call your doctor

- New or worsening stomach pain, acid reflux or indigestion. - Severe bone, joint or muscle pain. - New thigh or groin pain, which needs prompt assessment for a possible thigh bone fracture.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.

Before taking this medicine

Do not take alendronate if you have: • Problems with the esophagus (food pipe) that delay emptying, such as narrowing or achalasia. • An inability to stand or sit upright for at least 30 minutes. • Low blood calcium, which must be corrected before treatment. • An allergy to any ingredient in the product. Hives and angioedema (swelling) have been reported. Alendronate is not recommended for people with severe kidney impairment (creatinine clearance below 35 mL/min) and is not indicated for children. Stop taking it if pregnancy is recognized. Alendronate can cause upper digestive tract problems. Follow the prescribed administration instructions and stop taking it if new or worsening symptoms occur. Stop treatment if severe bone, joint or muscle pain develops. Jawbone damage (osteonecrosis) and unusual fractures, including thighbone fractures, have been reported. New thigh or groin pain needs medical assessment to rule out a fracture; your prescriber should reassess whether treatment should continue.

Interactions

Calcium supplements, antacids and other medicines taken by mouth that contain multivalent cations (certain mineral ions) can reduce alendronate absorption. Tell your doctor if you take any of these. Aspirin and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) may worsen irritation of the digestive tract when used with alendronate. Discuss their use with your doctor.
