Reclast

Before taking this medicine

Do not receive Reclast if you have low blood calcium, a creatinine clearance below 35 mL/min, acute kidney impairment, or a known allergy to zoledronic acid or any ingredient in Reclast. Reported allergic reactions include hives, swelling and anaphylaxis, including shock. Patients receiving Zometa must not receive Reclast. Reclast can worsen low blood calcium. Adequate calcium and vitamin D supplementation is required. Kidney toxicity is a concern, especially in people with existing kidney impairment, older adults or those who are dehydrated. Creatinine clearance must be checked before each treatment, with particular care to monitor kidney function in older adults. Jawbone damage has been reported. A routine oral examination by the prescriber is required before treatment. Unusual fractures, including thighbone fractures, have also been reported. Thigh or groin pain should be assessed for a possible fracture, and the prescriber should review whether treatment should continue. Severe bone, joint or muscle pain may occur; further treatment should be withheld if severe symptoms develop. Reclast should be discontinued when pregnancy is recognized. It is not indicated for children.
