About Fosamax Plus D
Overview
Fosamax Plus D is a tablet containing alendronate sodium, a bisphosphonate, and cholecalciferol (vitamin D3). It is used to treat osteoporosis in women after menopause and to increase bone mass in men with osteoporosis. Alendronate slows bone breakdown, while vitamin D3 helps the body absorb calcium and phosphate needed for normal bone formation. Fosamax Plus D alone should not be used to treat vitamin D deficiency.

Safety information
Side effects
Common side effects of alendronate include stomach pain, acid reflux, constipation, diarrhea, indigestion, nausea, and bone, joint or muscle pain. Serious side effects include upper digestive tract problems, worsening low blood calcium, severe bone, joint or muscle pain, damage to the jawbone (osteonecrosis), and unusual fractures, including thighbone fractures. Contact your doctor if these occur or are suspected. Stop taking Fosamax Plus D and contact your doctor if new or worsening upper digestive tract symptoms or severe bone, joint or muscle pain develop. New thigh or groin pain needs medical assessment to rule out a thighbone fracture. Low blood calcium must be corrected before treatment begins.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.
Before taking this medicine
Do not take Fosamax Plus D if you have a condition that delays emptying of the esophagus (the tube connecting the mouth to the stomach), such as narrowing or achalasia; cannot stand or sit upright for at least 30 minutes; have low blood calcium; or are allergic to any ingredient. Allergic reactions including hives and angioedema (swelling) have been reported. Low blood calcium must be corrected before treatment. Fosamax Plus D is not recommended for people with severe kidney impairment (creatinine clearance below 35 mL/min) and is not indicated for children. Stop taking it if pregnancy is recognized. Upper digestive tract reactions can occur. Follow the prescribed administration instructions and stop taking it if new or worsening upper digestive symptoms develop. Stop use if severe bone, joint or muscle pain develops. Jaw bone damage (osteonecrosis) and unusual fractures, including thigh bone fractures, have been reported. New thigh or groin pain needs medical assessment to rule out a fracture; the prescriber should review whether treatment should continue or be interrupted.
Interactions
Calcium supplements, antacids and oral medicines containing certain minerals (multivalent cations) can reduce alendronate absorption. Aspirin and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) may worsen irritation of the stomach and digestive tract when used with Fosamax Plus D. Some medicines can reduce vitamin D3 absorption or increase its breakdown. Tell your doctor about all medicines and supplements you take so they can review these interactions and consider whether additional vitamin D is needed.

Storage
Store below 25°C in a dry place, in the original pack, away from direct light and moisture. Do not keep it in a bathroom. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
