About Hyzaar

Overview

Hyzaar is a prescription tablet containing losartan potassium and hydrochlorothiazide. It treats high blood pressure; lowering blood pressure reduces the risk of strokes and heart attacks. It is also used to reduce stroke risk in people with high blood pressure and an enlarged left ventricle, although evidence suggests this benefit does not apply to Black patients. It works by combining losartan, which blocks angiotensin II receptors, with hydrochlorothiazide, a diuretic or “water pill.”

What it treats

- High blood pressure (hypertension). - Reducing stroke risk in patients with high blood pressure and an enlarged left ventricle (left ventricular hypertrophy). There is evidence that this benefit does not apply to Black patients.

Safety information

Side effects

Common side effects include dizziness, upper respiratory infection, cough and back pain. Contact a doctor if you develop low blood pressure, changes in kidney function, changes in potassium levels or other fluid or electrolyte imbalances. Serious risks also include acute angle-closure glaucoma, a sudden rise in pressure inside the eye that needs urgent medical attention, and worsening of systemic lupus erythematosus.

When to call your doctor

- Contact your doctor immediately if you become pregnant while taking Hyzaar. It can cause serious harm or death to an unborn baby.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.

Before taking this medicine

Do not take Hyzaar if you are allergic to any of its ingredients, cannot produce urine (anuria), or have diabetes and are taking aliskiren. Low fluid or salt levels must be corrected before starting Hyzaar because of the risk of low blood pressure. Kidney function and potassium levels may need monitoring in people at risk. Patients should also be monitored for signs of fluid or electrolyte imbalance. Other concerns include acute angle-closure glaucoma and worsening of systemic lupus erythematosus. Hyzaar is not recommended as initial treatment in people with liver impairment because the recommended starting dose is not available.

Interactions

Tell your doctor about medicines or supplements that increase potassium, as taking them with Hyzaar can cause high blood potassium. Other important interactions include: - Lithium: increased risk of lithium toxicity. - Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs): increased risk of kidney problems and reduced blood-pressure-lowering and diuretic effects of Hyzaar. - Other medicines that also block the renin–angiotensin system: increased risk of kidney problems, low blood pressure, fainting and high potassium. - Diabetes medicines: your doctor may need to adjust these medicines. - Cholestyramine or colestipol: may reduce absorption of hydrochlorothiazide, one of Hyzaar’s active ingredients.

Dosing

Dosing is set by your prescriber. Each health care professional may prescribe medication differently according to a patient's medical history and condition, so follow the directions on your prescription label and speak to your doctor or pharmacist before changing anything.

Storage

Store below 25°C in a dry place, in the original pack, away from direct light and moisture. Do not keep it in a bathroom. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
