About Imitrex , Imigran
Overview
Imitrex and Imigran contain sumatriptan, a prescription medicine used to treat migraine attacks with or without aura in adults. It is used to relieve an attack that has started, not to prevent future migraines. Sumatriptan acts on serotonin receptors to narrow certain blood vessels and reduce pain signals involved in migraine.

Acute treatment of migraine attacks, with or without aura, in adults. Not used to prevent migraines.
Safety information
Side effects
Common side effects of sumatriptan include dizziness, drowsiness, tingling, flushing, feelings of warmth or cold, tiredness, weakness, nausea and vomiting. Feelings of heaviness, pressure or tightness can also occur. Serious side effects require urgent medical attention: • Chest pain or tightness, pain spreading to the jaw or arm, shortness of breath, a fast or irregular heartbeat, or fainting may indicate a heart problem. Do not assume chest symptoms are harmless. • Sudden weakness on one side, difficulty speaking or sudden vision changes may indicate a stroke. • Swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat, difficulty breathing, or a widespread raised rash may indicate a severe allergic reaction. • Agitation, confusion, fever, sweating, tremor, muscle stiffness or a rapid heartbeat may indicate serotonin syndrome, particularly when sumatriptan is taken with other medicines that affect serotonin. • Severe abdominal pain, bloody diarrhoea, or painful, cold or discoloured fingers or toes may indicate reduced blood flow. • Seizures require emergency medical care. Frequent use of sumatriptan can worsen headaches. Contact your prescriber if headaches become more frequent or persistent.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.
Before taking this medicine
Sumatriptan should not be used by people who are allergic to it or any ingredient in the product. It should not be used by people with coronary artery disease, a previous heart attack, coronary artery spasm, a previous stroke or transient ischaemic attack (TIA), peripheral vascular disease, ischaemic bowel disease, uncontrolled high blood pressure or severe liver impairment. It is also contraindicated in people with Wolff–Parkinson–White syndrome or heart rhythm disorders involving accessory electrical pathways. Sumatriptan should not be used for hemiplegic migraine or migraine with brainstem aura, sometimes called basilar migraine. Do not use sumatriptan within 24 hours of another triptan or an ergot-containing medicine. It must not be used with monoamine oxidase A (MAO-A) inhibitors or within two weeks of stopping them. Medical assessment is needed before use in people with significant cardiovascular risk factors. Caution is also needed with controlled high blood pressure, liver or kidney impairment, a history of seizures or conditions that increase seizure risk, and sulfonamide allergy. Combining sumatriptan with certain antidepressants or other medicines that increase serotonin can cause serotonin syndrome, a potentially serious reaction. Pregnancy and breastfeeding require an individual assessment by the prescriber. Frequent use of migraine medicines can worsen headaches.
Interactions
Sumatriptan must not be used within 24 hours of another triptan or an ergot-type migraine medicine, such as ergotamine or dihydroergotamine, because of the risk of excessive blood vessel narrowing. Do not use sumatriptan while taking a monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitor or within two weeks of stopping one. These medicines can increase sumatriptan exposure. Antidepressants, including SSRIs, SNRIs and tricyclic antidepressants, can increase the risk of serotonin syndrome when combined with sumatriptan. Seek urgent medical help for symptoms such as agitation, fever, heavy sweating, a fast heartbeat, muscle stiffness or poor coordination. Tell your doctor about all medicines and supplements you take, including St John’s wort, which may increase side effects.

Storage
Store below 25°C in a dry place, in the original pack, away from direct light and moisture. Do not keep it in a bathroom. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
