About Linzess

Overview

Linzess contains linaclotide, a medicine used to treat certain types of constipation. It treats irritable bowel syndrome with constipation (IBS-C) in adults and children aged 7 years and older, and chronic idiopathic constipation (CIC) in adults. It also treats functional constipation in children aged 2 years and older. It acts locally in the intestine to increase fluid and help bowel contents move through more quickly.

Safety information

Side effects

Common side effects in adults include diarrhea, abdominal pain, gas and bloating. Diarrhea is the most common side effect in children aged 7–17 with irritable bowel syndrome with constipation and aged 6–17 with functional constipation. Diarrhea can be severe. If severe diarrhea occurs, stop taking Linzess and contact a doctor. Rehydration is needed.

Before taking this medicine

Do not take Linzess (linaclotide) if you have a known or suspected physical blockage in your stomach or intestines. It must not be given to children younger than 2 years because of the risk of serious dehydration. Linzess can cause severe diarrhea. If this occurs, stop taking it and seek medical advice. Fluids will need to be replaced to address dehydration.

Storage
