About Lomotil
Overview
Lomotil is a prescription tablet containing diphenoxylate hydrochloride and atropine sulfate. It is used alongside other treatment to manage diarrhea in people aged 13 years and older. Diphenoxylate helps control diarrhea, while a small amount of atropine is included to discourage deliberate overdose.

Side effects
Reported side effects include drowsiness, dizziness, headache, nausea, vomiting, reduced appetite, abdominal discomfort, tiredness, restlessness, numbness in the hands or feet, itching, flushing, and dry skin or mouth. Depression, unusually elevated mood, confusion and hallucinations have also been reported. The label does not state how common these effects are. Serious reactions that need urgent medical attention include suppressed breathing, reduced brain and nervous system activity, severe allergic reactions such as anaphylaxis or swelling beneath the skin, and toxicity from diphenoxylate or atropine. Other serious effects include: • Dehydration and an imbalance of salts in the body. • High body temperature, a fast heartbeat or inability to pass urine. • Inflammation of the pancreas. • Severe enlargement of the colon or loss of normal bowel movement that causes a blockage. • Gastrointestinal complications in people with infectious diarrhea. • Toxic megacolon, a dangerous enlargement of the colon, in people with acute ulcerative colitis. Hives and swelling of the gums have also been reported. Contact a doctor if these occur.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.
Before taking this medicine
Do not take Lomotil if you: - Are younger than 6 years, because of the risk of slowed breathing and depression of the central nervous system. - Have diarrhea caused by Clostridium difficile or other bacteria that produce toxins in the intestines, because of the risk of gastrointestinal complications, including sepsis. - Have a known allergy to diphenoxylate or atropine. - Have obstructive jaundice (jaundice caused by blocked bile flow).
Interactions
Avoid alcohol while taking Lomotil, as it can increase drowsiness and other effects that slow brain and nervous system activity. Tell your doctor if you take barbiturates, benzodiazepines, opioids, buspirone, antihistamines or muscle relaxants. These medicines may increase Lomotil’s nervous system effects. Your doctor may need to choose between Lomotil and the interacting medicine, or monitor you for side effects if use together cannot be avoided. Avoid Lomotil if you take monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs). This combination can cause a dangerous rise in blood pressure. Signs to watch for include headache, high body temperature and high blood pressure.

Storage
Store below 25°C in a dry place, in the original pack, away from direct light and moisture. Do not keep it in a bathroom. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
