About Xermelo
Overview
Xermelo is a prescription tablet containing telotristat ethyl. It is used with somatostatin analog (SSA) therapy to treat carcinoid syndrome diarrhea in adults whose diarrhea is not adequately controlled by SSA therapy alone. It works by reducing serotonin production outside the brain, which helps reduce the frequency of carcinoid syndrome diarrhea.
What it treats
Carcinoid syndrome diarrhea in adults whose symptoms are not adequately controlled by somatostatin analog (SSA) therapy. Xermelo is used together with SSA therapy.
Safety information
Side effects
Common side effects include nausea, headache, increased levels of the liver enzyme GGT, depression, gas, decreased appetite, swelling in the hands or feet, and fever. Xermelo reduces bowel movement frequency and can cause constipation. Stop taking Xermelo and contact your doctor if constipation or abdominal pain develops, especially if the pain is severe, persistent or worsening.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.
Before taking this medicine
Do not take Xermelo if you have had an allergic reaction to telotristat. Reported reactions include angioedema (swelling beneath the skin), rash and itching. Xermelo reduces bowel movement frequency. Watch for constipation or severe, persistent or worsening abdominal pain. Stop taking Xermelo if constipation or abdominal pain develops.
Interactions
Xermelo may make certain medicines less effective, including midazolam, bupropion and efavirenz. Tell your doctor if you take these or other medicines processed by the enzymes CYP3A4 or CYP2B6. Your doctor may monitor how well they work and adjust your treatment if needed.

Storage
Store below 25°C in a dry place, in the original pack, away from direct light and moisture. Do not keep it in a bathroom. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
