WARNINGS
Minoxidil tablets contain the powerful antihypertensive agent, minoxidil, which may produce serious adverse effects. It can cause pericardial effusion, occasionally progressing to tamponade, and angina pectoris may be exacerbated. Minoxidil should be reserved for hypertensive patients who do not respond adequately to maximum therapeutic doses of a diuretic and two other antihypertensive agents.
In experimental animals, minoxidil caused several kinds of myocardial lesions as well as other adverse cardiac effects (see
Cardiac Lesions in Animals).
Minoxidil must be administered under close supervision, usually concomitantly with therapeutic doses of a beta-adrenergic blocking agent to prevent tachycardia and increased myocardial workload. It must also usually be given with a diuretic, frequently one acting in the ascending limb of the loop of Henle, to prevent serious fluid accumulation. About Loniten
Overview
Loniten contains minoxidil, a medicine used to lower blood pressure. Minoxidil tablets are reserved for high blood pressure that causes symptoms or organ damage and cannot be controlled with a diuretic plus two other blood pressure medicines at their maximum therapeutic doses. It works by widening blood vessels outside the heart, helping to lower blood pressure.

Side effects
Increased body hair occurs in about 80% of people taking minoxidil tablets. Hair may become longer, thicker and darker, usually within 3 to 6 weeks of starting treatment. After treatment is stopped, it may take 1 to 6 months for hair growth to return to its previous appearance. Salt and water retention can cause swelling; temporary swelling occurred in 7% of patients who had no swelling before treatment. Nausea, vomiting and breast tenderness have also been reported. Changes in the heart’s electrical tracing (ECG) occur in about 60% of patients. The label reports no associated symptoms, and these changes usually disappear with continued treatment. Blood tests may also show changes in red blood cell measurements, kidney-related tests and alkaline phosphatase. Serious side effects include inflammation of the sac around the heart, fluid buildup around the heart, and pressure from that fluid that interferes with heart function (cardiac tamponade). Contact a doctor if swelling develops. Seek urgent medical attention for a severe or blistering rash. Rare skin reactions include Stevens–Johnson syndrome and toxic epidermal necrolysis. Low platelet counts and low white blood cell counts have also rarely been reported and require medical review.

Before taking this medicine
Do not take Loniten (minoxidil) if you have pheochromocytoma, as its blood-pressure-lowering action may trigger the release of catecholamines from the tumour. Do not take it if you have a history of an allergic reaction to minoxidil or any other ingredient in the tablets.
Interactions
Tell your doctor if you take guanethidine, as it can interact with minoxidil.
