Lotemax

Before taking this medicine

Do not use Lotemax if you have most viral infections of the cornea or conjunctiva, including epithelial herpes simplex keratitis (dendritic keratitis), vaccinia or varicella. It must also not be used if you have a mycobacterial eye infection or a fungal infection of any eye structure. Extra caution is needed if you have a history of herpes simplex eye infection, as eye steroids can prolong or worsen viral infections. They may also hide or worsen bacterial infections and increase the risk of secondary eye infections. Prolonged use can raise eye pressure and cause glaucoma with optic nerve damage and vision loss. Eye pressure should be monitored if treatment lasts 10 days or longer. Corticosteroids can also cause cataracts. Steroids may delay healing after cataract surgery and increase the risk of bleb formation. If the cornea or sclera is thinned by disease, topical steroids may cause a perforation. An eye examination is required before the initial prescription and any renewal. Persistent corneal ulcers during or after steroid use should be assessed for fungal infection.
