About Lucentis

Overview

Lucentis contains ranibizumab, a VEGF inhibitor given by injection into the eye. It treats wet age-related macular degeneration, macular edema following retinal vein occlusion, diabetic macular edema, diabetic retinopathy and myopic choroidal neovascularization. It works by blocking VEGF-A, a protein involved in new blood vessel growth and leakage in the eye, reducing these processes.

Safety information

Side effects

Common side effects include bleeding on the surface of the eye (conjunctival hemorrhage), eye pain, floating spots in your vision (vitreous floaters), and increased pressure inside the eye. Serious risks include infection inside the eye (endophthalmitis), retinal detachment, and increased eye pressure. Contact a doctor immediately if you suspect a serious eye problem after an injection. Monitoring after the injection is needed. There is also a potential risk of blood clots in arteries. The label reports more deaths among Lucentis-treated patients who had diabetic macular edema (DME) and diabetic retinopathy (DR) at the start of treatment than among control patients.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.

Before taking this medicine

Lucentis should not be used if you have an infection in or around the eye or are allergic to Lucentis. Serious infection inside the eye (endophthalmitis) and retinal detachment may occur after injection. Monitoring is needed after treatment. Increased pressure inside the eye has been reported both before and after injection. There is also a potential risk of blood clots in arteries with medicines of this type injected into the eye. In patients who had diabetic macular edema and diabetic retinopathy at the start of treatment, deaths occurred more frequently with Lucentis than in the control group.

Interactions

Drug interaction studies have not been conducted with Lucentis. Tell your doctor if you have recently had or are planning photodynamic therapy (PDT). Serious inflammation inside the eye occurred in some patients with neovascular age-related macular degeneration who received Lucentis alongside PDT, most often when Lucentis was given about a week after PDT.
