Before taking this medicine

Do not take Maxalt if you have: • Coronary artery disease, including angina, a previous heart attack or reduced blood flow to the heart, or another significant cardiovascular disease. • Spasms of the heart’s arteries, including Prinzmetal’s angina. • A history of stroke or transient ischaemic attack (TIA). • Peripheral vascular disease, ischaemic bowel disease or uncontrolled high blood pressure. • Hemiplegic or basilar migraine. • An allergy to rizatriptan or any tablet ingredient. Severe allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis and swelling beneath the skin, have been reported. Do not take Maxalt if you have used another triptan or an ergot-type medicine, such as ergotamine, dihydroergotamine or methysergide, within the past 24 hours. Do not take it while using an MAO-A inhibitor or within two weeks of stopping one. A heart assessment is needed before use if you have multiple cardiovascular risk factors. Chest, throat, neck or jaw pain, tightness, pressure or heaviness is generally not related to reduced blood flow to the heart, but needs assessment in people at high cardiovascular risk. Stop taking Maxalt and seek medical attention if heart rhythm problems, stroke, reduced blood flow to the bowel, blood vessel spasms affecting the limbs or serotonin syndrome occur. Overuse of migraine medicines can worsen headaches and may require withdrawal treatment. If you are pregnant, discuss use with your prescriber. Animal studies suggest Maxalt may harm the unborn baby.
