About Methimazole

Overview

Methimazole is a prescription antithyroid medicine taken as a tablet. It treats an overactive thyroid caused by Graves’ disease or toxic multinodular goiter when surgery or radioactive iodine treatment is not appropriate. It is also used to ease symptoms before thyroid removal surgery or radioactive iodine treatment. As an antithyroid medicine, it works to reduce thyroid activity.

What it treats

- Overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism) due to Graves’ disease or toxic multinodular goiter when surgery or radioactive iodine treatment is not appropriate. - Symptoms of hyperthyroidism before thyroid surgery or radioactive iodine treatment.

Side effects

Reported side effects include rash, hives, itching, nausea, vomiting, upper abdominal discomfort, joint or muscle pain, tingling, loss of taste, unusual hair loss, headache, drowsiness, dizziness or a spinning sensation, swelling, changes in skin colour, nerve inflammation, salivary gland problems and swollen lymph nodes. The label describes these as minor reactions but does not give their frequency. Serious side effects occur less frequently and warrant contacting a doctor. These include: • Reduced production of blood cells, including very low white blood cell counts, low platelets and aplastic anaemia. • Liver inflammation and jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes). Jaundice may persist for several weeks after the medicine is stopped. • Inflammation of blood vessels, which can cause severe complications. • An autoimmune reaction involving insulin that can cause low blood sugar and coma. • Drug-related fever, a lupus-like syndrome and reduced levels of a blood-clotting protein. • Kidney inflammation, reported very rarely. • Acute inflammation of the pancreas, reported after the medicine became available for use.

When to call your doctor

• Seek medical attention immediately for fever. • Seek medical attention immediately for yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice).

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.

Before taking this medicine

Do not take methimazole if you are allergic to methimazole or any other ingredient in the tablets.

Interactions

Methimazole may increase the effect of oral blood thinners such as warfarin. Your doctor may consider extra blood-clotting tests (PT/INR), especially before surgery. As thyroid levels return to normal, beta blockers, digitalis medicines and theophylline may need review. Digitalis levels may rise, and theophylline may be cleared from the body more slowly. Tell your doctor if you take any of these medicines; your doctor may need to adjust your treatment.

Storage

Store below 25°C in a dry place, in the original pack, away from direct light and moisture. Do not keep it in a bathroom. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
