Before taking this medicine

Do not take this medicine if you have a known or suspected allergy to salicylates, aminosalicylates or any of its ingredients. It should also be avoided if you have pyloric stenosis or another structural or functional blockage of the upper digestive tract. Tell your prescriber if you have kidney or liver problems, or take medicines that can harm the kidneys. Kidney function should be checked before and during treatment; treatment should be stopped if kidney function worsens. Older adults have an increased risk of blood disorders and need blood cell and platelet count monitoring. Stop treatment and seek immediate medical assessment if an allergic reaction is suspected, including inflammation of the heart muscle or its lining. Stop treatment at the first signs of a severe skin reaction. Worsening symptoms may indicate an acute intolerance reaction that can resemble an ulcerative colitis flare; treatment should be stopped if this is suspected. If you have a pre-existing skin condition, avoid sun exposure, wear protective clothing and use broad-spectrum sunscreen outdoors. Kidney stones have been reported; maintain adequate hydration during treatment. Tell healthcare professionals you are taking mesalamine, as it can falsely raise results in certain urine normetanephrine tests.
