About PREPIDIL
Overview
PREPIDIL contains dinoprostone, a naturally occurring prostaglandin E2. It is used in pregnant women at or near term when there is a medical or obstetric need to induce labor and the cervix is not yet ready. It helps the cervix ripen in preparation for labor induction.
What it treats
Used to help the cervix become ready for labor in pregnant women at or near term when labor induction is needed for medical or obstetrical reasons.
Safety information
Side effects
Reported side effects include abnormal uterine contractions, stomach or bowel symptoms, back pain, a warm feeling in the vagina and fever. Changes in the baby’s heart rate, including a slow heart rate or episodes of slowing, were also reported. Serious events that require immediate medical attention include rupture of the uterus, infection of the membranes surrounding the baby or serious infection in the baby before birth, waters breaking prematurely, reduced responsiveness in the baby at birth and excess acid in the baby’s blood. Abnormal uterine contractions and changes in the baby’s heart rate also require prompt medical assessment.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.
Before taking this medicine
PREPIDIL is not recommended for patients with: • A previous cesarean section or major uterine surgery. • A mismatch between the baby’s size and the mother’s pelvis that prevents vaginal delivery. • A history of difficult labor or traumatic delivery. • Six or more previous pregnancies carried to term. • A baby who is not positioned head first. • Excessively active uterine contractions or abnormally high uterine muscle tension. • Fetal distress when delivery is not imminent. • An obstetric emergency in which surgery is the safer option for the mother or baby. • An allergy to prostaglandins or any ingredient in PREPIDIL. • Placenta previa, where the placenta covers the cervical opening, or unexplained vaginal bleeding during the current pregnancy. • Any condition that makes vaginal delivery inappropriate, including vasa previa, where fetal blood vessels cross the cervical opening, or active genital herpes. It is also not recommended when medicines that stimulate uterine contractions should not be used or when prolonged uterine contractions would be inappropriate.
Interactions
PREPIDIL may increase the effects of other medicines that stimulate uterine contractions, such as oxytocin. Using them together is not recommended. If oxytocin is planned after PREPIDIL, your doctor must allow an appropriate interval between treatments.

Dosing

Storage
Store below 25°C in a dry place, in the original pack, away from direct light and moisture. Do not keep it in a bathroom. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
