Do not use estrogens with progestins to prevent heart disease, heart attacks, strokes, or dementia (decline in brain function).
Using estrogens with progestins may increase your chance of getting heart attacks, strokes, breast cancer, and blood clots.
Using estrogens with progestins may increase your chance of getting dementia, based on a study of women age 65 years or older.
You and your healthcare provider should talk regularly about whether you still need treatment with PROVERA.
About Provera
Overview
Provera is a prescription tablet containing medroxyprogesterone acetate, a derivative of progesterone. It treats periods that have stopped and abnormal uterine bleeding caused by hormonal imbalance when conditions such as fibroids or uterine cancer are not the cause. It is also used to help prevent excessive thickening of the uterine lining in postmenopausal women who still have a uterus and are taking oral conjugated estrogens.
What it treats
- Secondary amenorrhea (when menstrual periods have stopped). - Abnormal uterine bleeding due to hormonal imbalance, when no underlying condition such as fibroids or uterine cancer is present. - Prevention of endometrial hyperplasia (overgrowth of the uterine lining) in postmenopausal women who still have a uterus and are taking oral conjugated estrogens.

Before taking this medicine
Do not take Provera if you have any of the following: • Unexplained abnormal genital bleeding. • Known or suspected breast cancer, or a history of breast cancer. • Known or suspected cancer that depends on estrogen or progesterone. • A blood clot in a deep vein (DVT) or in the lungs (pulmonary embolism), or a history of either. • Current or previous disease caused by blood clots in arteries, such as a stroke or heart attack. • A known severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) or swelling under the skin (angioedema) caused by Provera. • Liver impairment or liver disease. • Known or suspected pregnancy.

Dosing

Storage
Store below 25°C in a dry place, in the original pack, away from direct light and moisture. Do not keep it in a bathroom. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
