About Uroxatral

Overview

Uroxatral contains alfuzosin, an alpha blocker. It treats the signs and symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia, also called an enlarged prostate. It works by blocking alpha-1 receptors in the prostate, around the base and neck of the bladder, and in the part of the urethra that passes through the prostate. Uroxatral is not indicated for treating high blood pressure or for use in children.

Safety information

Side effects

Common side effects include dizziness, upper respiratory tract infection, headache and fatigue. Contact a doctor if you develop symptoms of low blood pressure, particularly when standing, or if you faint. Stop taking Uroxatral and contact a doctor if chest pain (angina) appears or worsens. Tell your doctor if you have a history of QT prolongation, a heart rhythm abnormality, or take medicines that prolong the QT interval. Before cataract surgery, tell your eye surgeon that you take Uroxatral, as it can cause an iris problem during surgery called intraoperative floppy iris syndrome.

When to call your doctor

• Seek medical attention immediately for new or worsening chest pain. • Seek medical attention immediately if you faint or have severe dizziness.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.

Before taking this medicine

Do not take Uroxatral if you have moderate or severe liver impairment, are allergic to alfuzosin or any of its ingredients, or take strong CYP3A4 inhibitors such as ketoconazole, itraconazole or ritonavir. It should not be taken with other alpha blockers. Use requires caution if you have mild liver impairment, severe kidney impairment, low blood pressure with symptoms, or a history of low blood pressure caused by other medicines. Blood pressure medicines and nitrates may increase the risk of a drop in blood pressure on standing or fainting. Caution is also needed if you have a history of QT prolongation (a heart rhythm abnormality) or take medicines that prolong the QT interval. Prostate cancer should be ruled out before treatment. Tell your eye surgeon about Uroxatral before cataract surgery, as it can cause an iris problem that may require changes to the surgical technique. Stop taking Uroxatral if angina (heart-related chest pain) appears or worsens.

Interactions

Taking Uroxatral (alfuzosin) with PDE5 inhibitors may cause low blood pressure with symptoms. Tell your doctor if you take a PDE5 inhibitor before using Uroxatral.

Storage
