About Vyxeos
Overview
Vyxeos contains daunorubicin and cytarabine enclosed in tiny fat-based particles called liposomes and is given into a vein. It treats newly diagnosed therapy-related acute myeloid leukemia (t-AML) or AML with myelodysplasia-related changes (AML-MRC) in adults and children aged 1 year and older. The two medicines interfere with DNA and cell division to help kill leukemia cells.

Safety information
Side effects
Common side effects include bleeding, fever with low levels of infection-fighting white blood cells, rash, swelling, nausea, inflammation or sores in the mouth or digestive tract, diarrhea, constipation, muscle or bone pain, tiredness, abdominal pain, shortness of breath, headache, cough, reduced appetite, abnormal heart rhythms, pneumonia, bacteria in the blood, chills, sleep problems and vomiting. Contact a doctor promptly if you develop bleeding, fever, breathing difficulties, an abnormal heartbeat or signs of an allergic reaction. Serious or fatal bleeding can occur with prolonged low platelet counts. Other serious risks include heart damage, severe or life-threatening allergic reactions, copper overload and tissue death if the medicine leaks outside the vein. Report any problems at the infusion site promptly. Vyxeos can also harm an unborn baby.

Before taking this medicine
Do not use Vyxeos if you have had a serious allergic reaction to daunorubicin, cytarabine or any other ingredient in the medicine. Vyxeos is not recommended if your heart function is below normal. If heart function becomes impaired during treatment, treatment should be stopped unless the benefit of continuing outweighs the risk. Vyxeos can cause serious or fatal bleeding associated with prolonged low platelet counts. Blood counts must be monitored regularly until recovery. Severe or life-threatening allergic reactions require stopping treatment, appropriate care and monitoring until symptoms resolve. Leakage outside the vein can cause tissue death at the injection site, so intravenous access must be checked before administration. Vyxeos can harm an unborn baby. Females who could become pregnant should use effective contraception. Do not breastfeed during treatment.
Interactions
Tell your doctor about other medicines you take, especially those that can harm the heart or liver. If these are used with Vyxeos, your doctor should monitor your heart or liver function more frequently.

Dosing
Dosing is set by your prescriber. Each health care professional may prescribe medication differently according to a patient's medical history and condition, so follow the directions on your prescription label and speak to your doctor or pharmacist before changing anything.
Storage
Store in the original carton below 25°C, protected from light, unless the pack states refrigeration. Do not freeze. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
