About Alcaine
Overview
Alcaine is a local anesthetic eye solution containing proparacaine hydrochloride. It is used during procedures such as measuring eye pressure, removing foreign bodies from the cornea, and carrying out brief procedures on the cornea or conjunctiva. It works by temporarily numbing the surface of the eye.
What it treats
- Short-term numbing of the cornea for eye procedures, including eye pressure measurement (tonometry), examination of the eye’s drainage angle (gonioscopy), and removal of foreign objects from the cornea. - Local numbing for brief procedures involving the cornea or conjunctiva.
Safety information
Side effects
Occasional side effects include temporary stinging, burning and redness of the eye. Contact a doctor if you develop swelling of the cornea (the clear front surface of the eye) or an allergic skin reaction with dry, cracked fingertips. A rare, severe and immediate allergic-type reaction affecting the cornea has also been reported and requires urgent medical attention. This can involve intense inflammation, a gray or cloudy appearance, loss of large areas of the corneal surface and, sometimes, inflammation of the iris and an inner layer of the cornea.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.

Alcaine should not be used by anyone with a known allergy to proparacaine or any other ingredient in the solution.
Using Alcaine
Dosing

Storage
Store below 25°C away from direct light. Once opened, follow the in-use period printed on the pack and do not let the dropper touch the eye or any surface. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
