About Hylenex
Overview
Hylenex contains hyaluronidase, an enzyme used to help injected fluids and medicines spread through tissue and be absorbed. It is used alongside fluids given under the skin for hydration and with other injected medicines to improve their dispersion and absorption. It also helps the body absorb contrast agents given under the skin during imaging of the urinary tract. It works by temporarily breaking down hyaluronic acid in connective tissue, allowing injected fluids to move through the tissue more easily.
What it treats
- To help fluids given under the skin be absorbed for hydration. - To help other injected medicines spread and be absorbed. - To improve absorption of radiopaque contrast agents given under the skin for urinary tract imaging (subcutaneous urography).
Safety information
Side effects
The most frequently reported side effects are mild redness and pain at the injection site. Swelling has been reported most often when fluids are given under the skin. Hyaluronidase may also increase side effects from medicines given with it. Contact a doctor if you develop signs of an allergic reaction, such as hives or swelling beneath the skin. Rare anaphylaxis-like reactions have been reported following injections behind the eye or into a vein and require urgent medical attention. The label also warns about the spread of a local infection and eye damage.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.
Before taking this medicine
Hylenex must not be used in people with a known allergy to hyaluronidase or any of its other ingredients. Stop use if an allergic reaction develops. The label warns about the spread of localized infection and eye damage. Children, including premature and newborn infants, require special care to avoid overhydration when fluids are given under the skin, with careful control of the infusion rate and total fluid volume.
Interactions
Tell your doctor about all medicines you take, especially furosemide, benzodiazepines, phenytoin, dopamine, alpha agonists, local anesthetics, salicylates, cortisone, ACTH, estrogens or antihistamines. Furosemide, benzodiazepines and phenytoin are incompatible with hyaluronidase and should not be mixed with it. Hyaluronidase should not be used to increase the spread or absorption of dopamine or alpha agonists. With local anesthetics, hyaluronidase can make the anesthetic act sooner and wear off sooner, and increase the chance of reactions affecting the whole body. Large doses of salicylates, cortisone, ACTH, estrogens or antihistamines may reduce hyaluronidase’s dispersing effect. Your healthcare professional should check compatibility before mixing Hylenex with any other medicine.

Dosing
Dosing is set by your prescriber. Each health care professional may prescribe medication differently according to a patient's medical history and condition, so follow the directions on your prescription label and speak to your doctor or pharmacist before changing anything.
Storage
Store in the original carton to protect it from light. Check the pack for whether it must be refrigerated before first use. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
