About Alprolix
Overview
Alprolix is a recombinant coagulation factor IX medicine used in adults and children with hemophilia B, an inherited lack of factor IX. It is used to treat and control bleeding episodes, manage bleeding around surgery, and help reduce how often bleeding episodes occur. It works by temporarily replacing the missing factor IX needed for blood to clot.
What it treats
- Treatment and control of bleeding episodes in adults and children with hemophilia B (congenital factor IX deficiency). - Management of bleeding around surgery in adults and children with hemophilia B. - Routine prevention to reduce the frequency of bleeding episodes in adults and children with hemophilia B.
Safety information
Side effects
Common side effects in previously treated patients include headache, tingling or numbness in the mouth, and blockage of urine flow. In previously untreated patients, common side effects include redness at the injection site, allergic reactions, and antibodies that block Factor IX activity and may prevent treatment from controlling bleeding. Serious reactions include severe allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis. Stop Alprolix and seek urgent medical help if an allergic reaction occurs. Contact your doctor if bleeding is not controlled, as testing for Factor IX-blocking antibodies may be needed. Factor IX products have also been associated with blood clots. Nephrotic syndrome, a serious kidney condition, has been reported after immune tolerance treatment with Factor IX-containing products in people with haemophilia B who have Factor IX-blocking antibodies and a history of allergic reactions to Factor IX. These complications require medical attention.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.
Before taking this medicine
Do not use Alprolix if you have a history of allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis, to Alprolix or any of its ingredients: sucrose, mannitol, sodium chloride, L-histidine or polysorbate 20. Severe allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis, have been reported. If symptoms occur, stop using Alprolix and seek immediate medical care. Other important precautions include: • Antibodies called Factor IX inhibitors may develop and reduce the treatment’s effect. Testing is needed if Factor IX levels do not rise as expected or bleeding is not controlled with appropriate treatment. • Factor IX products have been associated with blood clots. • Nephrotic syndrome, a kidney disorder, has been reported after immune tolerance induction with Factor IX-containing products in people with hemophilia B who have Factor IX inhibitors and a history of allergic reactions to Factor IX.

Storage
