About Aptiom
Overview
Aptiom is a prescription medicine containing eslicarbazepine acetate, supplied as tablets. It is used to treat partial-onset seizures in adults and children aged 4 years and older. The body converts it to eslicarbazepine, which is thought to help control seizures by blocking certain sodium channels, although its exact action is not known.

Side effects
Common side effects of Aptiom include dizziness, sleepiness, nausea, headache, double or blurred vision, vomiting, tiredness, a spinning sensation (vertigo), problems with coordination, and shaking (tremor). Side effects in children are similar to those in adults. Use caution when driving or operating machinery. Serious side effects that warrant prompt medical attention include suicidal thoughts or behaviour, severe skin reactions, and serious allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis, swelling (angioedema), and DRESS, a reaction that can affect several organs. Other serious effects include low blood sodium, liver injury, and reduced blood cell counts. Contact a doctor promptly if you develop yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice), or problems with thinking, walking, coordination or vision. Your doctor may monitor blood sodium if you are at risk or have symptoms of low sodium. Abnormal thyroid function tests have also been reported.

Before taking this medicine
Do not take Aptiom if you are allergic to eslicarbazepine acetate or oxcarbazepine. Aptiom requires monitoring for suicidal thoughts or behaviour, serious skin reactions, and serious allergic reactions, including DRESS, anaphylaxis and angioedema. Treatment should be stopped if another cause for these reactions cannot be established. Sodium levels should be monitored in people at risk of low blood sodium or who develop symptoms. Dizziness, problems with walking or coordination, sleepiness, fatigue, problems with thinking and changes in vision also require monitoring. Use caution when driving or operating machinery. Aptiom should be stopped if jaundice or significant liver injury develops. Blood-related adverse reactions may also require stopping treatment. Any withdrawal should be managed by the prescriber; stopping abruptly can increase seizure frequency or cause prolonged seizures. During pregnancy, Aptiom may harm the unborn baby, based on animal studies.
Interactions
Tell your doctor if you take carbamazepine, phenytoin, phenobarbital or primidone, as your prescriber may need to adjust your treatment. Aptiom may reduce the effectiveness of hormonal contraceptives. If you use hormonal birth control, discuss this with your doctor.

Storage
Store below 25°C in a dry place, in the original pack, away from direct light and moisture. Do not keep it in a bathroom. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
