About Neurontin
Overview
Neurontin capsules contain gabapentin. It is used to manage postherpetic neuralgia, the nerve pain that can follow shingles, in adults. It is also used alongside other epilepsy medicines to treat partial-onset seizures in adults and children aged 3 years and older, including seizures that spread more widely. Exactly how gabapentin relieves pain and controls seizures is not known.
What it treats
- Postherpetic neuralgia (nerve pain after shingles) in adults. - Partial-onset seizures, with or without spread to the whole brain, in adults and children aged 3 years and older with epilepsy, as an add-on to other treatment.
Safety information
Side effects
Common side effects include dizziness, sleepiness, swelling of the arms or legs, poor coordination, tiredness and involuntary eye movements. In children aged 3 to 12 years treated for epilepsy, commonly reported effects include viral infections, fever, nausea and/or vomiting, sleepiness and hostile behaviour. Serious side effects include severe allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis and swelling beneath the skin, and DRESS, a hypersensitivity reaction that can affect several organs. These require immediate medical assessment. Slowed or impaired breathing is another serious risk, particularly when Neurontin is taken with opioids or other medicines that depress the central nervous system, or in people with existing breathing problems. Contact a doctor promptly about suicidal thoughts or behaviour, or changes in mood or behaviour, particularly in children aged 3 to 12 years. Seizures, including prolonged seizures, are also listed as serious adverse reactions. Stopping Neurontin suddenly or rapidly can increase seizure risk; withdrawal symptoms and suicidal thoughts or behaviour have also been reported after stopping. Neurontin can impair driving and the use of heavy machinery. Do not drive or operate heavy machinery until you know how it affects you.
When to call your doctor
If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.
Before taking this medicine
Do not take Neurontin if you have a known allergy to gabapentin or any of its ingredients. Extra caution is needed if you have breathing problems or take opioids or other medicines that slow central nervous system activity, as serious breathing problems may occur. Based on animal studies, gabapentin may harm an unborn baby. Neurontin can cause severe allergic reactions, including reactions affecting several organs. Stop taking it and seek immediate medical assessment if a severe allergic reaction occurs. Watch for suicidal thoughts or behaviour. Children aged 3 to 12 years should also be monitored for changes in mood and behaviour. Sleepiness and dizziness may impair driving or the use of heavy machinery. Do not drive or operate heavy machinery until you know how Neurontin affects you. Do not stop treatment suddenly or rapidly without medical guidance: this may increase seizure risk, and withdrawal symptoms or suicidal thoughts or behaviour have been reported after stopping.
Interactions
Tell your doctor if you take morphine, hydrocodone, naproxen or antacids containing aluminum and magnesium hydroxides. Morphine can increase gabapentin levels in the body, and your prescriber may need to adjust your treatment. Hydrocodone can also increase gabapentin exposure, while gabapentin can reduce hydrocodone exposure. The size of these interactions at other doses is not known. Naproxen may increase the amount of gabapentin absorbed. The extent of this interaction at usual treatment doses is not known. Antacids containing aluminum and magnesium hydroxides, such as Maalox, can reduce gabapentin absorption. Ask your doctor or pharmacist how to separate them from Neurontin. Cimetidine can slightly reduce gabapentin removal through the kidneys, but the label does not expect this to be clinically important.
