About Aredia
Overview
Aredia contains pamidronate disodium, a bisphosphonate medicine given into a vein. It treats moderate to severe high blood calcium caused by cancer, alongside adequate hydration, and moderate to severe Paget’s disease of bone. It is also used with standard cancer treatment for areas of bone destruction caused by breast cancer that has spread to bone or by multiple myeloma. In Paget’s disease, treatment can lower certain blood and urine markers of the condition.
What it treats
- Moderate or severe high blood calcium caused by cancer, with or without cancer spread to bone, alongside adequate hydration. - Moderate to severe Paget’s disease of bone. - Bone damage caused by breast cancer that has spread to bone or by multiple myeloma, alongside standard cancer treatment.
Safety information
Side effects
Commonly reported side effects of pamidronate disodium include a temporary mild fever, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, constipation, diarrhea, abdominal discomfort, tiredness, headache, and bone, back, muscle or joint pain. Redness, swelling, hardening or tenderness can occur where the infusion catheter is inserted. Some events reported in trials may have been related to the underlying illness or cancer treatment rather than pamidronate. Contact a doctor promptly about serious side effects, including worsening kidney function, low blood calcium or other mineral levels, fluid overload, irregular heartbeat, heart failure or gastrointestinal bleeding. Low red blood cell, white blood cell and platelet counts have also been reported. Seek urgent medical attention for an allergic reaction or significant breathing problems. A reported allergic reaction involved swollen, itchy eyes, a runny nose and a scratchy throat. Serious lung reactions reported in trials included inflammation of lung tissue and respiratory distress. Rare cases of eye inflammation have been reported and warrant medical assessment. Seizures were also reported in clinical trials; investigators did not consider them drug-related, but a possible link could not be ruled out. A seizure requires urgent medical attention.

Do not use Aredia if you have a clinically significant allergy to pamidronate disodium or other bisphosphonates.
