About Ojjaara

Overview

Ojjaara contains momelotinib, a kinase inhibitor supplied as tablets. It treats intermediate- or high-risk myelofibrosis in adults with anemia, including primary myelofibrosis and myelofibrosis that develops after polycythemia vera or essential thrombocythemia. It works by blocking proteins involved in abnormal blood-cell signaling and increasing the iron available for red blood cell production.

Safety information

Side effects

Common side effects of Ojjaara include low platelet counts, bleeding, bacterial infections, tiredness, dizziness, diarrhoea and nausea. Serious risks include infections, reactivation of hepatitis B, low platelet or white blood cell counts, liver injury, severe skin reactions, major heart or blood vessel events, blood clots and new cancers. The label highlights monitoring for new cancers particularly in people who smoke or have smoked in the past. Contact your doctor promptly if you develop signs of infection, bleeding, a severe skin reaction, or symptoms of heart or blood vessel problems or blood clots. Liver tests are needed before and periodically during treatment to check for liver injury. Symptoms may also worsen after treatment is interrupted or stopped; contact your doctor if this happens.

When to call your doctor

• Seek immediate medical attention for bleeding or a severe skin reaction. • Contact your doctor promptly if you develop signs or symptoms of infection. • Contact your doctor promptly if your symptoms worsen after treatment is paused or stopped.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.

Before taking this medicine

The label lists no formal contraindications to Ojjaara. However, treatment must not be started in anyone with an active infection. Conditions requiring caution and monitoring include infections, including reactivation of hepatitis B; low platelet or neutrophil counts; liver injury; severe skin reactions; major cardiovascular events; blood clots; and new cancers, particularly in current or former smokers. Liver tests are needed before and periodically during treatment. Low blood cell counts may require the prescriber to reduce or interrupt treatment. Treatment should be interrupted if a severe skin reaction is suspected while its cause is investigated. Ojjaara may harm an unborn baby. Do not breastfeed during treatment. Symptoms may worsen if treatment is interrupted or stopped.

Interactions

Tell your doctor if you take medicines that inhibit OATP1B1/B3, as you may need monitoring for side effects while taking Ojjaara. Also mention rosuvastatin or other medicines known as BCRP substrates. Rosuvastatin needs a dose reduction when used with Ojjaara; your prescriber will manage this. For other BCRP substrates, your doctor should follow the recommendations in that medicine’s approved product information.

Storage

Store below 25°C in a dry place, in the original pack, away from direct light and moisture. Do not keep it in a bathroom. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
