About Arimidex
Overview
Arimidex is a prescription tablet containing anastrozole, an aromatase inhibitor. It is used in postmenopausal women for additional treatment of hormone receptor-positive early breast cancer and as initial treatment for hormone receptor-positive or hormone receptor-unknown locally advanced or metastatic breast cancer. It is also used for advanced breast cancer that has progressed after tamoxifen treatment. It works by blocking the aromatase enzyme, lowering estrogen levels that can help breast cancer grow.
What it treats
- Hormone receptor-positive early breast cancer in postmenopausal women, as adjuvant treatment. - Hormone receptor-positive or hormone receptor-unknown locally advanced or metastatic breast cancer in postmenopausal women, as first-line treatment. - Advanced breast cancer in postmenopausal women whose disease has progressed after tamoxifen therapy. Patients with estrogen receptor-negative disease or no response to previous tamoxifen therapy rarely responded to Arimidex.
Safety information
Side effects
Common side effects include hot flashes, weakness, tiredness, joint pain or arthritis, back or bone pain, headache, nausea, vomiting, rash, high blood pressure, depression, trouble sleeping, cough, shortness of breath, sore throat, and swelling of the limbs or swelling caused by a build-up of lymph fluid. Osteoporosis and fractures are also reported. Seek urgent medical help for swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat, especially with difficulty swallowing or breathing. Contact a doctor promptly for skin sores, ulcers or blisters, or possible liver problems, including feeling generally unwell, yellowing of the skin or eyes, or pain or swelling around the liver. Liver blood tests may also change. Arimidex can reduce bone mineral density and increase cholesterol; your doctor may monitor both. In women with existing heart disease caused by reduced blood flow, heart and circulation problems occurred more often with Arimidex than with tamoxifen. Arimidex may harm an unborn baby; use effective contraception and contact your doctor if you become pregnant.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.
Before taking this medicine
Do not take Arimidex if you have had an allergic reaction to anastrozole or any of its other ingredients. Reported reactions include anaphylaxis, swelling under the skin (angioedema) and hives. If you have pre-existing ischemic heart disease (reduced blood flow to the heart), your prescriber should weigh the risks and benefits. In women with this condition, heart-related events caused by reduced blood flow occurred more often with Arimidex than with tamoxifen. Arimidex may reduce bone mineral density and raise total cholesterol. Your prescriber may consider monitoring your bone density and cholesterol. Arimidex may harm an unborn baby. Pregnancy status should be checked before treatment, and effective contraception should be used. Do not breastfeed during treatment.
Interactions
Do not use Arimidex with tamoxifen. The combination provides no additional benefit over tamoxifen alone. Tell your doctor if you use any estrogen-containing products, as these may reduce the activity of Arimidex.

Storage
Store below 25°C in a dry place, in the original pack, away from direct light and moisture. Do not keep it in a bathroom. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
