Drugs with thyroid hormone activity, alone or together with other therapeutic agents, have been used for the treatment of obesity. In euthyroid patients, doses within the range of daily hormonal requirements are ineffective for weight reduction. Larger doses may produce serious or even life-threatening manifestations of toxicity, particularly when given in association with sympathomimetic amines such as those used for their anorectic effects.
About Armour Thyroid
Overview
Armour Thyroid is an oral tablet made from dried porcine (pig) thyroid glands and contains the thyroid hormones T4 and T3. It is used to replace or supplement thyroid hormones in people with an underactive thyroid, except during temporary recovery from subacute thyroiditis. It is also used to suppress thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) in treating or preventing certain thyroid enlargements and nodules, and in managing thyroid cancer. It works by supplying thyroid hormones and reducing the pituitary gland’s release of TSH, which stimulates the thyroid.
What it treats
- Hypothyroidism (an underactive thyroid), as replacement or supplemental therapy, except temporary hypothyroidism during recovery from subacute thyroiditis. - Treatment or prevention of certain goiters with normal thyroid function, including thyroid nodules, multinodular goiter, and goiters associated with subacute thyroiditis or Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, by suppressing thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH). - Management of thyroid cancer by suppressing TSH.
Safety information
Side effects
Side effects may be signs of hyperthyroidism (an overactive thyroid) caused by too much thyroid hormone. These can occur when treatment starts or during ongoing treatment. The label states that other adverse reactions are rare.

Before taking this medicine
Armour Thyroid should generally not be taken by people with diagnosed but uncorrected adrenal insufficiency, untreated thyrotoxicosis (excess thyroid hormone), or a suspected allergy to any active or inactive ingredient. The label notes that true allergic or unusual individual reactions to thyroid hormone itself are not well documented.
