Drugs with thyroid hormone activity, alone or together with other therapeutic agents, have been used for the treatment of obesity. In euthyroid patients, doses within the range of daily hormonal requirements are ineffective for weight reduction. Larger doses may produce serious or even life-threatening manifestations of toxicity, particularly when given in association with sympathomimetic amines such as those used for their anorectic effects.

About Armour Thyroid

Overview

Armour Thyroid is a thyroid hormone medicine made from dried porcine (pig) thyroid glands. It is used to replace or supplement thyroid hormones in people with an underactive thyroid, except during the temporary recovery phase of subacute thyroiditis. It is also used to suppress thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) to treat or prevent certain thyroid enlargements and to help manage thyroid cancer. It works by supplying the thyroid hormones T4 and T3.

What it treats

- Hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid), as replacement or supplemental therapy, except temporary hypothyroidism during recovery from subacute thyroiditis. - Certain goiters (enlarged thyroid glands) with normal thyroid function, including thyroid nodules, multinodular goiter, and goiters associated with subacute thyroiditis or Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, through suppression of thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH). - Thyroid cancer management, through TSH suppression.

Before taking this medicine

Armour Thyroid should generally not be taken by people with diagnosed but uncorrected adrenal insufficiency, untreated thyrotoxicosis (excess thyroid hormone), or suspected hypersensitivity to any active or inactive ingredient. The label notes that true allergic or unusual individual reactions to thyroid hormone itself are not well documented.
