About Aromasin
Overview
Aromasin tablets contain exemestane, an aromatase inhibitor. It is used in postmenopausal women with estrogen-receptor-positive early breast cancer after initial treatment with tamoxifen. It is also used for advanced breast cancer in postmenopausal women whose disease has progressed after tamoxifen treatment. It works by blocking the aromatase enzyme, lowering estrogen levels that can support the growth of breast cancer cells.
What it treats
- Estrogen-receptor positive early breast cancer in postmenopausal women who have received two to three years of tamoxifen, switching to Aromasin to complete a total of five consecutive years of adjuvant hormonal therapy. - Advanced breast cancer in postmenopausal women whose disease has progressed after tamoxifen therapy.
Safety information
Side effects
Common side effects of Aromasin include hot flushes, tiredness, joint pain, headache, trouble sleeping, increased sweating, nausea and increased appetite. Serious risks include reduced bone mineral density, reduced blood flow to the heart, heart attack, angina and heart failure. Contact a doctor if you experience symptoms of a heart problem, and seek urgent medical help for a suspected heart attack. Discuss bone health with your doctor. Aromasin can harm an unborn baby. Contact your doctor if you become pregnant or think you may be pregnant. Use effective contraception if you could become pregnant.
Before taking this medicine
Do not take Aromasin if you have a known allergy to exemestane or any of its other ingredients. Aromasin can reduce bone mineral density over time. Vitamin D levels should be checked before starting treatment. Aromasin can harm an unborn baby. If you could become pregnant, use effective contraception. Do not breastfeed during treatment.
Interactions
Medicines that strongly increase the activity of the enzyme CYP3A4 can reduce the amount of exemestane in the body. Tell your doctor about medicines you take so they can check for this interaction and decide whether your Aromasin prescription needs adjusting.

Dosing

Storage
Store below 25°C in a dry place, in the original pack, away from direct light and moisture. Do not keep it in a bathroom. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
