About Avodart
Overview
Avodart (dutasteride) is a prescription medicine supplied as capsules. It treats symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in men with an enlarged prostate and helps reduce the risk of suddenly being unable to pass urine or needing BPH-related surgery. It works by blocking enzymes that convert testosterone into DHT, a hormone involved in prostate enlargement. Avodart is not approved to prevent prostate cancer.
What it treats
- Symptomatic benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in men with an enlarged prostate, used alone or with tamsulosin to improve symptoms and reduce the risk of acute urinary retention and BPH-related surgery.
Safety information
Side effects
Common side effects include difficulty getting or keeping an erection, reduced sex drive, ejaculation problems, and breast disorders. Avodart may increase the risk of high-grade prostate cancer. It also lowers prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels by about 50%. Any confirmed rise in PSA during treatment should be evaluated by a doctor because it may signal prostate cancer, even if the result is within the normal range for men not taking Avodart.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.
Before taking this medicine
Do not take Avodart if you are pregnant or have previously had a clinically significant allergic reaction, such as a serious skin reaction or angioedema (swelling), to dutasteride or another 5 alpha-reductase inhibitor. Dutasteride may harm an unborn male baby. Women who are pregnant or may be pregnant should not handle Avodart capsules. Avodart lowers prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels and may increase the risk of high-grade prostate cancer. Any confirmed rise in PSA during treatment should be evaluated, even if the result remains within the normal range for untreated men. Other urinary conditions that could cause similar symptoms should be considered before treatment begins. Do not donate blood during treatment or until 6 months after your last dose.
Interactions
Tell your doctor if you take ritonavir or another strong inhibitor of the CYP3A4 enzyme long term. Avodart should be used with caution with these medicines.

Storage
Store below 25°C in a dry place, in the original pack, away from direct light and moisture. Do not keep it in a bathroom. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
