About Banzel
Overview
Banzel contains rufinamide, a prescription medicine used to treat seizures. It is used alongside other seizure medicines for seizures associated with Lennox-Gastaut syndrome in adults and children aged 1 year and older. Its exact way of working is unknown, but laboratory studies suggest it affects sodium channels in nerve cells, helping limit repeated electrical signals.

Safety information
Side effects
Common side effects include headache, dizziness, tiredness, sleepiness and nausea. Contact a doctor promptly if you develop new or worsening depression, suicidal thoughts or behaviour, or unusual changes in mood or behaviour. Other serious side effects include nervous system reactions, shortening of the QT interval (a change in the heart’s electrical activity), a serious hypersensitivity reaction that can affect multiple organs (DRESS), and a low white blood cell count (leukopenia). Do not stop rufinamide suddenly. It should be withdrawn gradually under your prescriber’s guidance to reduce the risk of seizures, worsening seizures or prolonged seizures (status epilepticus).

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.
Before taking this medicine
Do not take Banzel (rufinamide) if you have Familial Short QT syndrome. It is not recommended for people with severe liver impairment. Caution is needed if you take other medicines that shorten the QT interval. If you receive dialysis, your prescriber may need to adjust treatment because dialysis can remove rufinamide. During pregnancy, rufinamide may harm the unborn baby, based on animal data. Watch for new or worsening depression, suicidal thoughts or behaviour, or unusual changes in mood or behaviour. Reactions affecting the central nervous system can also occur. A hypersensitivity reaction affecting multiple organs requires discontinuation of rufinamide. Do not stop treatment suddenly. Withdrawal should be gradual under your prescriber’s direction to reduce the risk of new, worsening or prolonged seizures.
Interactions
Valproate can increase rufinamide levels, particularly in children. Tell your prescriber if you take valproate, as this affects how rufinamide treatment is started. Rufinamide may make hormonal contraceptives less effective. Use an additional non-hormonal method of contraception and discuss suitable options with your doctor. Rufinamide can reduce exposure to some medicines, including triazolam. It may also increase blood levels of chlorzoxazone, although this has not been studied. Carbamazepine and phenobarbital may have minor effects on how the body breaks down rufinamide. Tell your doctor if you take any of these medicines.
