About Cellcept
Overview
Cellcept capsules contain mycophenolate mofetil, a medicine that suppresses the immune system. It is used with other immune-suppressing medicines to help prevent rejection of a transplanted kidney, heart or liver in adults and children aged 3 months and older. It works by limiting the multiplication and activity of certain immune cells involved in transplant rejection.
What it treats
Prevention of organ rejection after a kidney, heart or liver transplant in adults and children aged 3 months and older, used together with other medicines that suppress the immune system.
Safety information
Side effects
Common side effects include diarrhoea, vomiting, infections and a low white blood cell count (leukopenia). Certain infections, including those that occur when the immune system is weakened, may be more frequent. Serious side effects include serious infections, low neutrophil counts (a type of white blood cell), reduced red blood cell production, and bleeding, ulcers or holes in the stomach or intestines. Inflammatory reactions and allergic reactions can also occur. Contact your doctor promptly if you develop an infection or suspect a serious side effect. Blood tests are needed to monitor for blood cell problems. Other serious risks include lymphoma and other cancers, and harm to an unborn baby. Discuss these risks with your doctor. Cellcept may also affect your ability to drive or operate machinery.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.
Before taking this medicine
Do not take Cellcept if you have had an allergic reaction, including anaphylaxis, to mycophenolate mofetil, mycophenolic acid or any of its ingredients. It should also be avoided in people with hypoxanthine-guanine phosphoribosyl-transferase (HGPRT) deficiency. Cellcept requires blood-test monitoring because it can cause low white blood cell counts and reduced red blood cell production. Particular caution is needed if you have an existing stomach or bowel disorder, as bleeding, ulcers and perforation can occur. Treatment also requires monitoring for acute inflammatory syndrome. If an allergic reaction occurs, Cellcept must be stopped and the reaction treated and monitored until symptoms resolve. Avoid live attenuated vaccines during treatment. Do not donate blood during treatment or for 6 weeks after stopping, or semen during treatment or for 90 days after stopping. Sexually active male patients and/or their female partners should use effective contraception during treatment and for at least 90 days after stopping. Cellcept may affect your ability to drive or operate machinery.
Interactions
Tell your doctor if you take antacids containing magnesium or aluminum hydroxide, proton pump inhibitors, telmisartan, calcium-free phosphate binders, or medicines that affect drug recycling between the gut and liver. These may reduce Cellcept exposure in the body and make it less effective. Cellcept may reduce the effectiveness of oral contraceptives. An additional barrier method of contraception is recommended. Discuss this with your doctor.

Storage
Store below 25°C in a dry place, in the original pack, away from direct light and moisture. Do not keep it in a bathroom. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
