About Combivent Respimat
Overview
Combivent Respimat is an inhalation spray containing two bronchodilators, ipratropium bromide and albuterol sulfate. It is used for people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) who still have airway narrowing despite using a regular inhaled bronchodilator and need a second bronchodilator. The two ingredients work in different ways to relax the muscles around the airways, helping them open.
What it treats
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) with ongoing bronchospasm (airway tightening) despite regular use of an inhaled bronchodilator, when a second bronchodilator is needed.
Safety information
Side effects
Common side effects include upper respiratory infections, inflammation of the nose and throat, cough, bronchitis, headache, and shortness of breath. Serious side effects include sudden worsening of airway narrowing after use, effects on the heart and circulation, severe allergic reactions including anaphylaxis, low blood potassium, eye problems, and difficulty passing urine. Contact a doctor if you develop blurred vision, halos around lights, other vision changes, or difficulty passing urine. Avoid spraying the medicine into your eyes. Stop using Combivent Respimat and seek immediate medical help if breathing suddenly worsens after use or you develop signs of an allergic reaction, such as hives, rash, swelling of the face, mouth or throat, or difficulty breathing.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.
Before taking this medicine
Do not use Combivent Respimat if you are allergic to any of its ingredients, atropine or atropine-related medicines. Use with caution if you have a heart or blood vessel disorder, narrow-angle glaucoma, an enlarged prostate, bladder-neck obstruction, a seizure disorder, an overactive thyroid or diabetes. Patients with narrow-angle glaucoma should be monitored. Avoid spraying the medicine into your eyes. Contact a doctor if you develop blurred vision, see halos around lights or notice other visual changes. Stop using Combivent Respimat immediately and seek medical help if it causes sudden worsening of wheezing or breathing, or an immediate allergic reaction such as hives, rash, swelling of the face, mouth or throat, or anaphylaxis. Alternative treatment will be needed.
Interactions
Discuss the following medicines with your doctor before using Combivent Respimat: - Other anticholinergic medicines: combined use should be avoided because their effects may add together. - Other sympathomimetic medicines, including beta-agonist bronchodilators: combined use should be avoided because it may increase the risk of side effects affecting the heart and blood vessels. - Beta-blockers: these can reduce albuterol’s effect. Your doctor may consider an alternative if your airways are especially reactive. - Diuretics (water tablets): use with beta-agonists may worsen low blood potassium or changes in the heart’s electrical activity. Your doctor may monitor potassium levels. - Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) or tricyclic antidepressants: these may increase albuterol’s effects on blood vessels. Your doctor may consider an alternative treatment. Combivent Respimat has also been used with methylxanthines and oral or inhaled steroids for COPD, but formal studies have not fully evaluated the safety and effectiveness of these combinations.

Dosing

Storage
Store below 25°C away from direct heat and sunlight. Do not pierce or burn the device, even when it is empty. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
