About Duoneb
Overview
Duoneb is a prescription inhalation solution in a vial containing ipratropium bromide and albuterol sulfate, two medicines that help open the airways. It treats bronchospasm (tightening of the airways) associated with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in people who need more than one bronchodilator. The two ingredients work in different ways to relax the muscles around the airways and help them open.

Side effects
Constipation and voice changes were reported in more than 1% of patients in the clinical trial. Other reported effects include drowsiness, aches, flushing, altered taste, back pain, sore throat, sinusitis and upper respiratory tract infection. Contact a doctor promptly for possible allergic reactions such as rash, itching or hives; a fast heartbeat or palpitations; or worsening COPD symptoms. Seek urgent medical attention for sudden worsening of breathing or wheezing after treatment, or acute eye pain, blurred vision or enlarged pupils, which may be associated with new or worsening narrow-angle glaucoma. Metabolic acidosis, a buildup of acid in the blood, has also been reported. For reactions reported outside the trial, their frequency and whether the medicine caused them cannot always be reliably determined.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.
Before taking this medicine
Do not use Duoneb if you have a history of an allergic reaction to ipratropium, albuterol, any other ingredient in the medicine, or atropine or its derivatives.
Interactions
Discuss the following medicines with your doctor before using Duoneb: • Other medicines with anticholinergic effects: their effects may add to those of ipratropium. • Other sympathomimetic medicines: combining them with Duoneb may increase the risk of adverse effects on the heart and blood vessels. • Beta-blockers: these and albuterol can reduce each other’s effects. They require caution in people with overly reactive airways; if needed, the label recommends a relatively selective beta-1 blocker. • Diuretics (“water tablets”) that do not retain potassium, such as loop or thiazide diuretics: albuterol may worsen low potassium levels or changes in the heart’s electrical activity caused by these medicines. • Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) or tricyclic antidepressants: extreme caution is needed during treatment and for 2 weeks after stopping them, because they may increase albuterol’s effects on the heart and blood vessels.
