About Corifact
Overview
Corifact contains coagulation factor XIII derived from human plasma. It is used in adults and children with congenital factor XIII deficiency to help prevent bleeding and manage bleeding around surgery. It works by helping strengthen blood clots and protect them from breaking down.
What it treats
- Routine prevention of bleeding in adults and children with congenital Factor XIII deficiency. - Management of surgical bleeding around the time of surgery in adults and children with congenital Factor XIII deficiency.
Safety information
Side effects
The most commonly reported side effects of Corifact include joint inflammation or pain, allergic reactions, rash, itching, skin redness, collections of blood outside blood vessels (hematomas), and headache. Blood tests may show increased thrombin–antithrombin and lactate dehydrogenase levels. Serious reactions include allergic reactions, sudden loss of blood flow to tissue (acute ischemia), and antibodies that neutralize factor XIII. Blood clots have also been reported. Contact a doctor promptly if you suspect a serious reaction. Because Corifact is made from human blood, it may transmit infectious agents, including viruses and the agent that causes variant Creutzfeldt–Jakob disease (vCJD). There is also a theoretical risk of transmitting the agent that causes Creutzfeldt–Jakob disease (CJD).

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.
Before taking this medicine
Do not use Corifact if you have had an anaphylactic reaction or another severe whole-body reaction to a human plasma-derived product. Corifact may cause allergic reactions. Antibodies that inhibit its activity have been detected, and blood clots have been reported. Because it is made from human blood, it may carry a risk of transmitting infectious agents, including viruses, the agent that causes variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD) and, theoretically, the agent that causes Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD). Children clear Corifact from the body faster than adults, so the prescriber may need to adjust treatment.

Dosing
Dosing is set by your prescriber. Each health care professional may prescribe medication differently according to a patient's medical history and condition, so follow the directions on your prescription label and speak to your doctor or pharmacist before changing anything.
Storage
Store in the original carton below 25°C, protected from light, unless the pack states refrigeration. Do not freeze. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
