About Dupixent

Overview

Dupixent (dupilumab) is a prescription medicine injected under the skin. It treats certain patients with atopic dermatitis, eosinophilic esophagitis, prurigo nodularis, chronic spontaneous urticaria, bullous pemphigoid or allergic fungal rhinosinusitis. It is also used as an add-on maintenance treatment for certain patients with asthma, chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), but not to relieve sudden breathing attacks. It works by blocking signals from IL-4 and IL-13, two proteins involved in inflammation.

What it treats

- Moderate-to-severe atopic dermatitis in adults and children aged 6 months and older when prescription topical treatments do not adequately control it or are not advisable. - Moderate-to-severe asthma with an eosinophilic phenotype, or asthma requiring oral corticosteroids, in adults and children aged 6 years and older, as add-on maintenance treatment. - Inadequately controlled chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps in adults and children aged 12 years and older, as add-on maintenance treatment. - Eosinophilic esophagitis in adults and children aged 1 year and older who weigh at least 15 kg. - Prurigo nodularis in adults. - Inadequately controlled chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) with an eosinophilic phenotype in adults, as add-on maintenance treatment. - Chronic spontaneous urticaria in adults and children aged 2 years and older who still have symptoms despite H1 antihistamine treatment. It is not indicated for other forms of urticaria. - Bullous pemphigoid in adults. - Allergic fungal rhinosinusitis in adults and children aged 6 years and older who have previously had nasal or sinus surgery. Dupixent is not for relief of sudden airway narrowing or severe, prolonged asthma attacks.

Safety information

Side effects

Common side effects vary depending on the condition being treated. They include injection site reactions; eye inflammation, itching or dryness; eyelid inflammation; blurred vision; cold sores and other herpes infections; nose, throat and upper respiratory infections; throat pain; and increased levels of eosinophils, a type of white blood cell. Other common effects include headache, dizziness, difficulty sleeping, joint or muscle pain, back pain, diarrhoea, toothache, stomach lining inflammation, urinary tract infections and inflammation inside the nose. Serious side effects include allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis, swelling and severe skin reactions. Dupixent must be stopped if an allergic reaction occurs; seek urgent medical help. Contact your doctor promptly about new or worsening eye symptoms. Inflammation of the eye surface, cornea or eyelids may require an eye examination, and persistent or worsening symptoms may require stopping treatment. Also report new psoriasis symptoms or new joint symptoms, which may indicate psoriatic arthritis. Serious eosinophilic conditions can involve a rash caused by inflamed blood vessels, worsening breathing symptoms, heart complications, kidney injury or nerve problems, especially when oral corticosteroids are reduced. Contact your doctor promptly if these occur. Parasitic worm infections are also a concern. Existing infections should be treated before starting Dupixent. If an infection develops during treatment and does not respond to treatment for worms, Dupixent should be stopped until the infection resolves.

When to call your doctor

- Seek immediate medical attention for an allergic reaction, including swelling, hives or a rash. - Get urgent medical advice for worsening breathing symptoms, especially while oral corticosteroids are being reduced. - Promptly report new or worsening eye symptoms, including blurred vision, redness, itching or dryness. - Contact your doctor for new joint pain or new psoriasis symptoms, or if these symptoms persist or worsen.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.

Before taking this medicine

Do not use Dupixent if you have a known allergy to dupilumab or any of its other ingredients. Serious allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis, have occurred. Stop using Dupixent if an allergic reaction occurs. Promptly report new or worsening eye symptoms to your healthcare provider. Eye inflammation, including conjunctivitis, keratitis and blepharitis, can occur. Persistent or worsening symptoms may require an eye examination or stopping treatment. Conditions involving eosinophils, a type of white blood cell, require caution, particularly when oral corticosteroids are reduced. Warning signs include a rash related to inflamed blood vessels, worsening lung symptoms, heart complications, kidney injury or nerve problems. Do not abruptly stop oral, topical or inhaled corticosteroids when starting Dupixent; any reduction should be supervised by your prescriber. Report new psoriasis symptoms or joint symptoms to your healthcare provider. Persistent or worsening symptoms may require specialist assessment or stopping treatment. Existing parasitic worm infections should be treated before starting Dupixent. If an infection develops during treatment and does not respond to treatment for the infection, Dupixent should be stopped until the infection resolves. Avoid live vaccines during treatment.

Using Dupixent

Dosing

Dosing is set by your prescriber. Each health care professional may prescribe medication differently according to a patient's medical history and condition, so follow the directions on your prescription label and speak to your doctor or pharmacist before changing anything.

Storage

Store in the original carton to protect it from light. Check the pack for whether it must be refrigerated before first use and how long it may be kept at room temperature afterwards. Keep all medicines out of the sight and reach of children.
