About Elmiron
Overview
Elmiron is a prescription medicine containing pentosan polysulfate sodium. It is used to relieve bladder pain or discomfort associated with interstitial cystitis. It comes as capsules taken by mouth.

Side effects
The more frequently reported side effects of Elmiron include hair loss, diarrhea, nausea, headache, rash, indigestion, abdominal pain, abnormal liver function tests and dizziness. These were reported in 1% to 4% of patients in a long-term trial. Contact a doctor if you develop severe abdominal pain, severe diarrhea or dehydration, an allergic reaction, shortness of breath, unusual bruising, or bleeding such as nosebleeds or bleeding gums. Severe abdominal pain or diarrhea with dehydration required hospitalization in some patients. Other reported effects that warrant medical attention include low platelet or white blood cell counts, anemia, prolonged blood clotting, inflammation of the optic nerve, reduced vision and bleeding in the retina. Because the long-term trial had no comparison group, it was not always possible to determine whether reported events were caused by Elmiron, other medicines or underlying illnesses.

If symptoms are severe or getting worse quickly, seek emergency care rather than waiting.
Before taking this medicine
Do not take Elmiron if you have a known allergy to pentosan polysulfate sodium, structurally related compounds, or any of its other ingredients.
Interactions
Tell your doctor if you take warfarin or other medicines that reduce blood clotting. In a study in healthy volunteers, Elmiron did not meaningfully change warfarin levels or INR, a measure of blood clotting. However, the label advises precautions when Elmiron is used with other treatments that have anticoagulant effects.

Storage
